World leaders voice concern over violence triggered by George Floyd's death
World leaders have urged for restraint as the unrest sparked by the death of an unarmed black man in police custody in the US took global proportions.
The chant "Black lives matter" has echoed across the world as mass rallies were held in major US cities and in London, Berlin, Milan, Dublin, Toronto, and New Zealand.
British prime minister Boris Johnson described the killing of Floyd as "appalling and inexcusable." Johnson supported the right to protest but added, "I also believe that protests should take place in a lawful and reasonable way."
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his horror at the turn of events and said, "It is a time to pull people together, but it is a time to listen, it is a time to learn what injustices continue despite progress over years and decades."
The European Union's top diplomat Josep Borrell backed the right to protest peacefully and called for a de-escalation of tensions. (CGTN)
US will allow limited flights by Chinese airlines, not a ban
The Trump administration said Friday it would let Chinese airlines operate a limited number of flights to the US, backing down from an earlier threat to ban flights from China.
The Transportation Department said it would let Chinese passenger airlines fly a total of two round-trip flights per week between the US and China, which it said would equal the number of flights China’s aviation authority will allow for US carriers.
On Wednesday, the US said it would prohibit all flights by Chinese airlines to and from the US no later than June 16. (AP)
EU, UK to step up Brexit talks despite limited progress
Brussels and London pledged Friday to step up the pace of Brexit trade talks to try to strike a deal by the end of October after the latest round of negotiations ended with no major breakthrough.
EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier accused Britain of backtracking on divorce terms agreed last year as he reported "no significant progress" in four days of talks held by videolink because of coronavirus.
Barnier's UK counterpart David Frost noted "limited" advances and asked that both sides "intensify and accelerate our work" to clinch the deal. (AP)
Fiji declares itself coronavirus free
Fiji announced it was coronavirus free Friday after the island nation's last known infected patient was given the all-clear.
There was panic among Fiji's 930,000 population when the first COVID-19 case was reported in mid-March, but strict isolation measures and border controls kept a lid on infections, which peaked at 18 confirmed cases.
Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama attributed the country's virus-free status to "answered prayers, hard work, and affirmation of science." (AP)
DPRK to withdraw from joint liaison office with ROK
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday announced its withdrawal from the joint liaison office with the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the DPRK's border town of Kaesong, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
The liaison office was originally established for 24/7 communications between the two sides. (CGTN)
China Unicom has 130,000 5G base stations in operation
China Unicom, one of the country's major telecommunications operators, said Friday it has about 130,000 5G base stations in operation nationwide.
The 5G base stations provide commercial services in over 50 cities across the country.
The company estimated its 5G base stations would reach 300,000 in number by the end of this year, covering all prefecture-level cities. (Xinhua)
Beijing to offer coupons worth 12 billion yuan
Starting Saturday, Beijing will offer coupons worth 12.2 billion yuan ($1.71 billion) to spur consumption.
As long as people are in the city, or their delivery address is in Beijing, buyers can use the coupons; however, company buyers are prohibited from using them.
The first batch of coupons will be available on Saturday at e-commerce company JD.com. The coupons can be used at restaurants and retailers in Beijing, and for online purchases. (China Daily)
