China offers help to 150 countries, 4 int'l organizations to fight COVID-19: white paper

China had sent 29 medical expert teams to 27 countries and offered assistance to 150 countries and four international organizations as of May 31, said a white paper released Sunday by China's State Council Information Office.

China has provided two separate financial relief packages totaling $50 million to the World Health Organization (WHO), said the white paper "Fighting COVID-19: China in Action."

Local governments, enterprises, non-governmental organizations, and individuals in China have donated materials to more than 150 countries and regions, and international organizations through various channels, the white paper noted. (Xinhua)

Trump orders National Guard withdrawal from Washington DC

US President Donald Trump announced he was ordering the National Guard, who had been deployed in Washington DC to deal with the ongoing protests, to begin withdrawing from the nation's capital.

A group of uniformed military personnel was seen in front of the White House on Saturday, as thousands of protesters swelled into DC to stage what has been the largest demonstration in the capital since the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis black man, at the hands of local police.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser wrote Trump a letter Friday, urging him to "withdraw all extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence" in her city, citing the peaceful nature of the demonstrations. (Xinhua)

Officials urge Floyd protesters to get coronavirus tests

As New York City prepared to reopen after a more than two-month coronavirus shutdown, officials on Sunday lifted a curfew that was put in place amid protests of police brutality and racial injustice. But they also urged that demonstrators be tested for COVID-19.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the state planned to open 15 testing sites dedicated to protesters so they can get results quickly.

The call is similar to what officials in cities like Seattle, San Francisco, and Atlanta have made following massive demonstrations, with free testing set up for protesters who may have been exposed to the virus. (AP)

Billions of desert locusts are swarming through war-torn Yemen, threatening crops, and exacerbating the food crisis.

The rainy season and the shortage of pesticides due to the war have left the swarms of migratory locusts out of control.

The five-year civil war between the government forces and Houthi rebels has pushed more than 20 million to the brink of starvation. (Xinhua)

Small asteroid safely flew by Earth

Asteroid 2002 NN4 safely passed Earth on Saturday at a distance of approximately 5.1 million kilometers, about 13 times further away than the Moon is from Earth.

The asteroid is estimated to be about 250 to 570 meters in diameter. There is no danger the asteroid will hit Earth, said an official statement from NASA.

According to NASA, the number of discovered near-Earth objects (NEO) totaled 22,776 by April, with an average of 30 discoveries added each week. (Xinhua)

The largest species of Asianopodus footprints found in Xinjiang

The largest species of Asianopodus footprints have been discovered by a research team with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the Junggar Basin in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. 

Scientists said the large three-toed footprints are from a new species.

The fossilized footprints are 47-56 centimeters long and 31-42 centimeters wide. Judging by their shape, researchers deduced that the three-toed prints belong to a theropod dinosaur.

The new species is about 1.5 times longer than the largest previously recorded Asianopodus footprint. (Global Times)

Conor McGregor makes 3rd retirement announcement in 4 years

Conor McGregor has announced his retirement for the third time in four years.

McGregor abruptly made his latest dubious declaration Sunday morning on Twitter, where the former two-division UFC champion also announced his retirement in 2016 and 2019.

The 31-year-old Irish superstar revitalized his combat sports career in January with an impressive first-round stoppage of Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC 246. (AP)
