Exhibition featuring world heritage 'Liangzhu City' opens in Beijing

An exhibition featuring China's newly elected UNESCO World Heritage site, the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, opened at the Palace Museum in Beijing Tuesday.

The exhibition, titled "Liangzhu and Ancient China: The 5,000-Year Civilization Demonstrated by Jades," will showcase a total of 260 items.

With four parts, the exhibition aims to reflect features of an early regional state of Liangzhu civilization and its influence on later culture, as well as explain the significance of Liangzhu to the Chinese civilization. (Xinhua)

Young Hong Kong 'astronauts' to receive training in Beijing

Thirty selected local secondary school students in Hong Kong will set off for Beijing on July 27 for a nine-day "astronaut" training program, according to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government website on Tuesday.

In the training camp running from July 27 to August 4, the students will visit major space and astronomy facilities, attend lectures on space science and technology, and experience astronaut training, including wearing spacesuits and cooking in "space kitchen."

After the training, they will take an examination for certificates. (Xinhua)

EU lawmakers narrowly approve von der Leyen as new EU chief

The European Union’s parliament has confirmed German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen to be the new president of the EU’s executive commission.

The European Parliament voted 383-327 with 22 abstentions on Tuesday to approve von der Leyen’s nomination. She will be the first woman to serve as European Commission president.

The confirmation required an absolute majority of 374 votes. (AP)

Italian police seize missile, weapons from far-right extremists

Police in Italy said they launched raids against a far-right extremist group on Monday and seized a large arsenal of military weapons, including an air-to-air missile, machine guns and rocket launchers. Authorities said the finds are without precedent.

Officers arrested three men, including Fabio Del Bergiolo, who ran for the Italian Senate as a political candidate for Forza Nuova, an extreme right party, in 2001.

The missile, 3.54 meters long, was made in France and once belonged to the Qatari armed forces. Del Bergiolo tried to sell it for 470,000 euros.

Investigations are underway to determine how it arrived in Italy. (CGTN)

Canadian plane crash leaves 3 dead, 4 missing

Three people were killed and four others are missing after a float plane crashed in Newfoundland and Labrador province in eastern Canada on Monday night, local media reported.

The plane left a fishing lodge near Schefferville in Quebec Monday and was flying to a remote fishing camp on Mistasin Lake near the crash site.

Seven people, including four fishermen and two guides as well as the pilot, were aboard the plane of Air Saguenay when it crashed in northern Labrador.

Navy rescue crews were still searching the area Tuesday afternoon, looking for the missing. (Xinhua)

China builds protection network for Yunnan golden hair monkeys

Southwest China's Yunnan Province announced on Monday the establishment of a protection network for the province's golden hair monkeys, also known as black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys.

The network is the province's first wildlife safety network and will be managed by both the local government and private sector.

As one of the world's most endangered primates, the monkey is considered a bellwether species for biodiversity in the high-altitude region. (Xinhua)

'Game of Thrones' reigns with record 32 Emmy nominations

The nominations for the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced Tuesday, with HBO's drama series champ "Game of Thrones" setting a new record with 32 nominations -- the most for any program in a single season.

The result helps HBO to retake No. 1 spot for most nominations by platform this year, giving it a total of 137 and beating Netflix which was second with 117.

NBC came in third with 58 nominations, followed by Amazon which received 47 nods.

The 71st Emmy Awards show will be presented on September 22 in Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. (Xinhua)
