China unveils new financial opening-up measures

China has announced a slew of new measures to further open up its financial markets, according to the office of financial stability and development committee under the State Council, the cabinet.

China will allow foreign-funded institutions to conduct credit rating business with all kinds of bonds in China's inter-bank and exchange bond market, according to a statement by the office posted on the website of the central bank on Saturday.

Overseas financial institutions will be encouraged to participate in setting up and investing in the asset management subsidiaries of commercial banks. (Xinhua)

63,000 int'l students receive Chinese government scholarships in 2018

A total of 63,000 international students were funded by Chinese government scholarships in 2018, accounting for 12.8 percent of the total foreign students in China, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said Saturday.

According to the ministry, 70 percent of the funded students were pursuing master or doctoral degrees.

China has signed official education exchange agreements with more than 180 countries, under which both sides can send students to each other's countries for further study. (Xinhua)

Iran says captured British tanker hit Iranian fishing boat

The British oil tanker, seized by Iran on Friday, had an accident with an Iranian fishing boat and ignored its distress call, Allah-Morad Afifipoor, head of Ports and Maritime Organization in southern Hormozgan Province, said on Saturday.

Following the collision on Friday, the Iranian fishing boat "contacted the British vessel but didn't receive any response," so they informed the Hormozgan maritime organization, he said.

The tanker was taken to Iran's Bandar Abbas port, where it and its crew will remain while a probe is carried out into the British vessel's conduct, he added. (Xinhua)

Japanese police obtain arrest warrant for anime studio arson suspect

Japanese police on Saturday obtained an arrest warrant for the man who was apprehended over a deadly arson attack on a Kyoto Animation Co. studio, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Shinji Aoba, 41, was taken to a hospital in Kyoto after allegedly setting fire to the three-storey studio building with gasoline, which killed 34 people.

According to investigative sources, police have already obtained the warrant for Aoba and are waiting for him to recover from the serious burns he suffered before arresting him.

While his motive is unclear at the moment, he was quoted as telling police that he set the fire because the company "stole a novel," claiming his ideas had been plagiarized. (Xinhua)

20 foreign crew rescued in East China Sea

A total of 20 crew were rescued in the East China Sea Saturday, according to the Donghai Rescue Bureau of the Ministry of Transport.

A container ship that is registered in the Marshall Islands lost power due to mechanical problems caused by a typhoon about 25 nautical miles east of the Yangtze River estuary on Friday evening.

The bureau immediately organized and implemented a rescue operation after receiving word of the ship's distress, sending a rescue ship at 5:30 a.m. Saturday and rescuing the crew aboard the vessel. (Xinhua)

HK star Simon Yam stabbed in shocking scene

Famous Hong Kong actor Simon Yam was stabbed in the stomach while attending a promotional event on Saturday morning for a real estate project in Zhongshan, Guangzhou province.

In a shocking video from an onlooker posted online, a man rushed onto the stage at 10:17 a.m., pulling a knife out of his trousers to stab Yam.  Eventually, a group of security men were able to overpower the man.

Yam was rushed to a hospital, and local police later released a report confirming he had been hospitalized for a check-up, but had not suffered a life-threatening injury. (China.org.cn)
