Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged BRICS countries to deepen strategic partnership and work to open up a second "Golden Decade" at the Plenary Session of the 10th BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The session, hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, was also attended by Brazilian President Michel Temer, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Delivering a speech titled "Turn Our Vision into a Reality," Xi pointed out the outstanding features of the new industrial revolution and put forward initiatives on the future development of the BRICS cooperation.

"Let us work together with the rest of the international community for an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security and common prosperity," said the Chinese president.

To build the new chapter in BRICS cooperation, Xi put forward a four-point proposal.

First, he called on the BRICS partners to unlock the enormous potential of economic cooperation by stepping up trade, investment, economic, financial, and connectivity cooperation to make this pie still bigger.

Second, Xi urged the BRICS members to safeguard global peace and security, and to stay committed to multilateralism, as well as the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Third, the BRICS partners should expand people-to-people exchanges.

Fourth, the BRICS countries should build a network of closer partnerships.(Xinhua)

Forty-four foreign airlines changed the way they refer to Taiwan on their websites, as the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) asked them to change their websites to list Taiwan as part of China ahead of a Wednesday deadline.

United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Hawaiian Airlines informed the CAAC on Wednesday they have revised their websites and will complete their updates in two weeks.

The CAAC confirmed the revisions but said they fail to fulfill all the requirements. The authority said it will closely monitor developments and civil aviation management procedures will be activated, if necessary. (People’s Daily app)

North Korea will transfer the remains of an unspecified number of soldiers killed in the Korean War on Friday, after accepting some 100 wooden caskets sent by the US, Yonhap news agency of the Republic of Korea reported.

The repatriation of the remains of US soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War was one of the agreements reached during the summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore in June.

The planned transfer would coincide with the 65th anniversary of the 1953 armistice agreement that ended the fighting. (CGTN - People’s Daily app)

Concerns linger in Europe after US-EU trade truce

European capitals on Thursday welcomed the trade truce announced by the EU and US but doubts lingered over its feasibility and the changing moods of US President Donald Trump.

Trump and European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday announced a plan to defuse the lingering trade row, that in effect saw Washington back off a threat of auto tariffs against Europe.

Germany hailed the decision, given their world dominating auto industry was the first in line to be punished by Trump's protectionist offensive, while French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire demanded “clarifications” over the agreed measures.

The details of the deal in Washington remained vague, with a statement mentioning that the transatlantic allies would "launch a new phase" in the relationship. (AFP)

Chinese internet giants recently launched new online vaccine-tracking services, allowing concerned parents to check the safety of their children's vaccines.

Concerned parents had previously been able to confirm the safety of these vaccines by checking with their local hospitals, but internet-savvy parents had been seeking information online. Search engine Sogou published data showing that searches on vaccine safety multiplied 20-fold in the week after the scandal emerged on July 17.

Alibaba on Tuesday launched a vaccine inquiry service, where users can search the batch number of a vaccine and check its validity and its use-by date.

Baidu also launched a vaccine inquiry service on Wednesday, using data from the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA).
