Xi, Turkish president hold talks, agreeing to deepen strategic cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Great Hall of the People on Tuesday, pledging more efforts to promote strategic cooperation between the two sides and work for sound bilateral ties.

Noting China and Turkey are both major emerging markets and developing countries, Xi said enhancing strategic cooperation is of great significance.

He called on the two sides to deepen political mutual trust, beef up strategic communication, respect each other's core interests and major concerns on issues pertaining to national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and consolidate the political foundation underlying the development of China-Turkey strategic cooperative relationship to keep bilateral ties on a healthy and stable track.

Turkey stays committed to the one-China policy, Erdogan said, stressing that residents of various ethnicities living happily in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region thanks to China's prosperity is a hard fact, and Turkey will not allow anyone to drive a wedge in its relations with China. (Xinhua) 

China's two shipbuilding giants plan merger

China's two largest shipbuilders are planning to merge, according to information disclosed Monday by their listed arms.

China Shipbuilding Industry and China State Shipbuilding are planning for a strategic reorganization, according to filings from their respective listed subsidiaries.

The details have yet to be decided and will be subject to approval from related authorities, the filings also said. (Xinhua) 

EU leaders break deadlock, nominate new chiefs

European Union leaders on Tuesday agreed on the future leadership of EU institutions.

European Council President Donald Tusk said in a series of tweets Tuesday that German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen has been backed to become president of the executive European Commission, and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel the head of the European Council.

France’s Christine Lagarde has been nominated as the head of the European Central Bank and Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell as EU foreign policy chief. (AP) 

14 sailors killed in fire on Russian deep-water facility

At least 14 submariners were killed in a fire on a deep-water research facility in Russian waters, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

According to the statement, the fire has been extinguished by the crew and the vessel has been towed to Russia's Severomorsk naval base.

It added that an investigation into the accident is underway. (Xinhua) 

US targets $4 bln EU goods for potential tariffs over aircraft dispute

The US government on Monday proposed punitive tariffs on additional 4 billion US dollars of EU goods amid their dispute over aircraft subsidies.

The US Trade Representative's Office (USTR) released a supplemental list of 89 tariff sub-categories to its initial list, which includes cheese, pork, pastas, fruits, coffee and whiskies, as well as chemicals and metals, among others, the agency said in a statement on Monday.

Washington and Brussels have been locked in a long-running row over aircraft subsidies, accusing each other at the WTO of engaging in unfair practices.

The WTO has found wrongdoings on both sides, with the US targeting Airbus and the EU against Boeing. (Xinhua) 

Sri Lanka's ex-police chief, defense secretary arrested over Easter attack-related charges

Sri Lanka's former police chief and defense secretary were arrested on Tuesday following instructions issued by the Attorney General who called for them to appear in court over alleged negligence in preventing the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

President Maithripala Sirisena had, soon after the terror attacks blamed Fernando and Jayasundara for failing in their duties to act on an April 4 intelligence report which provided information on possible attacks on April 21.

Fernando, who was removed from his post by Sirisena following the attacks, and Jayasundara who was sent on compulsory leave, have both denied all allegations against them. (Xinhua) 

Hainan to phase out oil-fueled auto sales by 2030

China's Hainan Province said Tuesday it would phase out sales of traditional oil-fueled vehicles by 2030.

Hainan governor Shen Xiaoming made the announcement at the ongoing 2019 World New Energy Vehicle Congress held in the coastal town of Boao.

Starting this year, all vehicles added or replaced in the public service sector, including government cars and buses, will use clean energy. By 2030, the sales of oil-fueled vehicles will not be available throughout the province. (Xinhua)
