China, Bangladesh agree to Belt and Road cooperation

China and Bangladesh on Thursday agreed to advance their cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative.

The consensus was reached by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and visiting Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is on an official visit to China.

Li voiced China's willingness to keep close high-level exchanges with Bangladesh, strengthen strategic mutual trust, boost mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance people-to-people friendship, so as to push for new development of bilateral relations.

Li stressed that China stood ready to better synergize the Belt and Road Initiative with Bangladesh's development strategy, and speed up mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.

Hasina expressed her congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and said Bangladesh-China ties are at a high level.

Both sides are committed to peace, stability, mutual benefits, and settlement of disputes by peaceful means, Hasina said. (Xinhua) 

China rolls out psychological care program targeting elderly

China has introduced a two-year pilot program to find out the psychological conditions and needs of senior citizens at the primary level, the National Health Commission (NHC) announced Thursday.

Covering 1,600 urban communities and 320 villages, the pilot program targets permanent residents aged 65 or above.

The program was initiated in response to increasingly prominent mental problems among the elderly in recent years, according to the NHC. (Xinhua) 

Ballistic missile hits Yemen's Marib governor house, Houthi rebels blamed

The Yemeni government said a ballistic missile hit the residence of Marib governor on Thursday, blaming Houthi rebels for the attack, state Saba news agency reported.

Governor Sultan al-Aradah was unhurt in the attack and there were no other casualties, it reported.

There were no comments from the Houthi group on the attack. (Xinhua) 

Union Pay issues over 7.5 billion cards globally

China's payment giant Union Pay has issued over 7.5 billion cards around the world, including 1.2 billion in 52 countries and regions outside the Chinese mainland, the company said in a statement.

Union Pay International (UPI), the company's subsidiary focusing on global business, announced on Thursday that its payment service covers over 550 merchant locations and nearly 29 million ATM machines in 174 countries and regions.

There are 27 million overseas merchant locations that accept Union Pay cards. (China Plus) 

China's lunar orbiter captures Earth's images during solar eclipse

A microsatellite developed by the Harbin Institute of Technology in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, which is now orbiting the moon, took photos of Earth during the solar eclipse in the early hours of Wednesday.

The microsatellite, weighing 47 kg and named Longjiang-2, was sent into space on May 21, 2018, together with the Chang'e-4 lunar probe's relay satellite "Queqiao".

The team cooperated with amateur radio operators in Spain and Germany in taking and receiving the photos. Four pictures taken by the microsatellite during the solar eclipse were sent back to Earth on Wednesday. (Xinhua) 

6.4 magnitude earthquake rattles Southern California

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rattled a large area of Southern California on Thursday, July 4, which is Independence Day in the United States.

The quake struck at 10:33am local time and was centered near Ridgecrest in the Searles Valley, a remote area of San Bernardino County about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles, according to the LA Times.

This is the largest earthquake since the 6.6 Northridge quake in 1994, which killed dozens and caused billions of dollars in damage. (People's Daily app) 

Man who dumped water on Baidu CEO given 5-day detention

The man who emptied a bottle of water on the head of Baidu CEO Robin Li at the Baidu Create conference on Wednesday has been punished with a 5-day administrative detention for creating a public disturbance, media reported.

Baidu condemned the man's behavior in a statement on its official Sina Weibo account. It also said that, although all kinds of unexpected events can happen on their path towards the development of AI, they won't divert from their course and will keep moving forward. (China Plus)
