US farmers likely to lose the Chinese market: Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs

Despite the $12 billion aid package from the White House, American farmers still face the threat of losing the Chinese market that they have worked for decades to explore, said Han Jun, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, in a press briefing Thursday.

China will remain committed to opening up its agricultural industries despite trade tensions with the US, Han added.

He said China as the largest importer of agricultural products and the US as the largest exporter should enhance cooperation in strengthening agricultural trade, which is a win-win choice for both countries.

In 2017, China imported from the US nearly $14 billion in beans, nearly $3 billion in livestock products and $1.51 billion in grains. As for China's exports to the US, they include $3.22 billion of fish, $1.15 billion of vegetables and $0.77 billion dollars of fruit. (People’s Daily app)

Queen Elizabeth's official pays respect to forgotten Chinese WWI workers

An official representative of Queen Elizabeth II paid tribute on Friday to the Chinese men who played a key, but largely forgotten, role in the First World War.

A national event took place in Liverpool to remember the almost 100,000 members of the Chinese Labor Corps (CLC) who were recruited by the British government.

Mark Blundell, Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, addressed a large gathering at Liverpool's Anfield cemetery where five members of the CLC are buried.

"What they did was neither easy nor glamorous, yet it was essential. Sadly, their story is little known. On behalf of Her Majesty the Queen, I should like to say thank you to the men of the Chinese Labor Corps. We shall remember them," He said. (Xinhua)

Stolen airplane crash 'not a terrorist incident': local sheriff

Local authorities quickly ruled out terrorism as a motive for a man who stole and crashed a Horizon Air turboprop plane and that the F-15s "were not involved in the crash."

The aircraft "crashed in south Puget Sound," Sea-Tac Airport officials said, adding that normal operations at the transport hub had resumed after a pause.

An airline employee "conducted an unauthorized takeoff" of an airplane carrying no passengers, according to airport officials.

The suspect was identified as a 29-year-old Pierce county resident who "acted alone," according to the Pierce County Sheriff. (AFP)

Death toll from Indonesia quake tops 380

An earthquake on the Indonesian island of Lombok has killed 387 people, authorities said Saturday, adding hundreds of thousands of displaced people were still short of clean water, food and medicine nearly a week on.

The 6.9-magnitude quake Sunday levelled tens of thousands of homes, mosques, and businesses across Lombok, just one week after another tremor surged through the island and killed 17.

The number forced from their homes in the disaster has soared to 387,000, according to the national disaster agency, with around 13,000 injured.

The hardest hit region of Lombok has been in the north, where 334 people have died and nearly 200,000 have been forced from their homes, according to latest official tolls. (AFP)

US jury orders Monsanto pay $290mn to cancer patient in weed killer trial

A California jury on Friday ordered chemical giant Monsanto to pay nearly $290 million for failing to warn a dying groundskeeper that its weed killer Roundup might cause cancer.

Jurors unanimously found that Monsanto acted with "malice" and that its weed killers Roundup and the professional grade version RangerPro contributed "substantially" to Dewayne Johnson's terminal illness.

Johnson, a California groundskeeper diagnosed in 2014 with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma says he repeatedly used a generic form of RangerPro while working at a school in Benicia, California. (AFP)

DRC neighbors on high alert over Ebola outbreak

Neighboring countries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are tightening preventive measures over an Ebola outbreak in which 10 people have died in eastern DRC.

The Tanzanian Minister for Health said Friday the east African nation was on high alert after reports of the disease hitting the DRC.

In Uganda, the ministry of health said it was on high alert following the Ebola outbreak, saying all travelers from DRC will be screened before being allowed into the country. (Xinhua)

Last-minute technical problem delays NASA’s flight to the Sun

A last-minute technical problem on Saturday delayed NASA’s unprecedented flight to the Sun.

The early morning launch countdown was halted, keeping the Delta IV rocket on its pad with the Parker Solar Probe.

Rocket maker United Launch Alliance said it would try again Sunday, provided the helium-pressure issue can be resolved in time.

The $1.5-billion mission is already a week late because of rocket issues.

The next launch is planned for early Sunday morning at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, when weather conditions are 60 percent favorable for launch, NASA said. (CGTN)
