42 individuals awarded national medals, honorary titles

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday signed a presidential decree to award 42 Chinese and foreign individuals national medals and honorary titles, as the People's Republic of China prepares to celebrate its 70th anniversary.

The conferring of the Medal of the Republic, the Friendship Medal and national honorary titles, with some to posthumous awardees, was endorsed by the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, the top legislature, at a special session on Tuesday. (Xinhua)

Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic mascots unveiled

An animated giant panda named "Bing Dwen Dwen" and a red lantern baby called "Shuey Rhon Rhon" have been unveiled as the two mascots for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The mascots, revealed on Tuesday night at Beijing's Shougang Ice Hockey Arena, are strongly associated with the host nation's culture. 

The launch sees the end of a submission process which began on August 8, 2018 and saw more than 5,800 design proposals from China and abroad. (Xinhua)

S.Korea implements removal of Japan from whitelist of trusted export partners

South Korea's trade ministry said Tuesday that it implemented the removal of Japan from its whitelist of trusted export partners beginning midnight.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced the removal decision on Aug. 12, and had since gone through necessary procedures, including the collection of public opinion and the legality deliberation.

South Korean companies shipping strategic materials to Japan would be required to go through more complicated documentation, the approval for which would take about 15 days. It is longer than the previous five days. (Xinhua)

South Korea reports 1st case of African swine fever

South Korea on Tuesday reported its first case of African swine fever, a viral disease for pigs that has no vaccines nor cures yet, according to the agriculture ministry.

The case was officially confirmed at 6:30 a.m. local time, after the five dead pigs at a farm in Paju of Gyeonggi province tested positive, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

All the 3,950 pigs or so at the farm were culled. No other case has been found yet within a 3-km radius of the farm.

Right after the confirmation, the ministry raised the warning level to the highest, while issuing a 48-hour standstill order to all pig farms nationwide temporarily. (Xinhua)

7 Cambodian airport employees charged for stealing passengers' valuables

A Cambodian court has charged seven Cambodia Airport baggage handlers with theft and aggravating circumstances, crimes that can bring a jail term of up to 10 years if convicted, a court spokesman and a local police chief said on Tuesday.

Police arrested them late last month for allegedly breaking open passengers' luggage and stealing their belongings at the Siem Reap International Airport.

A police spokesman said the accused, all men, had broken open passengers' or tourists' suitcases and had stolen their valuables from 2017 to Aug. 26, 2019. (Xinhua)

Second suspect arrested in golden toilet theft

UK police have arrested a second suspect in the unusual case involving the theft of a golden toilet from Winston Churchill’s birthplace.

Thames Valley Police said Tuesday that a 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to burgle and has been released pending investigation.

The two suspects have not been charged or identified. The police investigation over the Saturday morning theft at Blenheim Palace is ongoing. (AP)

Swimmer completes four non-stop crossings of English Channel

A new world record has been set by a woman from the US, who swam across the English Channel four times non-stop.

Sarah Thomas, who is recovering from cancer, completed the feat in 54 hours and 10 minutes, beating a previous record of three crossings.

The distance of the swim was supposed to be about 130 kilometers, but strong currents and tides meant Thomas ended up swimming about 210 kilometers. (CGTN)
