China announced on Tuesday it will impose additional tariffs on US products worth $60 billion starting from Sept. 24 in response to the newly announced US tariffs on Chinese goods.

The Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council unveiled lists of 3,571 items of US products to be subject to additional tariffs of 10 percent and lists of another 1,636 items to be subject to additional tariffs of 5 percent.

The new tax rates will take effect at 12:01 pm Beijing time on Sept. 24, said the commission.

China hopes the US side will stop frictions from expanding and jointly safeguard bilateral trade ties with China through equal, honest and pragmatic dialogue, on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefits, the commission said in a statement.

That will also serve to defend the free trade principle and multilateral trade system, and global economic prosperity and development, it said.

The United States, disregarding overwhelming international and domestic opposition, announced to impose additional 10-percent tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese products from Sept. 24 and that it will take other escalating tariff measures. (Xinhua)

China follows investigations of Buddha head suspected from Longmen Grottoes

Researchers of China's Longmen Grottoes are watching closely the investigations into the Buddha head from an auction in New York, which may be from the UNESCO world heritage site, reports Henan Daily.

The Buddha head listed on Sotheby's auction on September 12 has triggered disputes. According to Sotheby's catalogue, the Buddha head is believed to date back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD).

However, it was later found that the item highly resembles the head of a Buddha statue at the Longmen Grottoes, as shown in a photo taken by Japanese scholars in the 1920s at the grottoes. It is estimated that the head of the Buddha statue in the photo was stolen between 1920 and 1949.

Researchers have made field investigations at the grottoes and will closely follow the development of the matter and collect related information, said the staff.

If the Buddha head is confirmed to be from the Longmen Grottoes, they will move for its repatriation to China, said the staff. (China Plus)
