China has become a fertile land for global entrepreneurs and innovation, with new growth drivers breaking new ground for the country's economic development, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said Wednesday.

"Among all industrial sectors, high-tech and advanced manufacturing have been taking the lead, while new business models have been constantly emerging in the service industry, and the upgrading of industrial structure has been on the fast track," he said at the opening plenary of the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2018, known as Summer Davos.

Currently, significant changes are taking place in China's economic structure and growth pattern, while new growth drivers have contributed more than one-third to China's economic growth as well as to more than two-thirds of new jobs in Chinese cities and townships. (Xinhua)

China plans two Mars missions by 2028

China will launch two Mars missions, the first one in 2020 and then again in 2028 as four deep space exploration missions are planned before 2030,according to Li Guoping, director general of the Department of System Engineering at the China National Space Administration.

The first Mars probe will blast off in 2020. It is expected to orbit, land and then put a rover on the Red Planet in 2021, after a ten-month voyage.

The second Mars probe is set for 2028 and will bring samples back to Earth.

China will also probe asteroids and undertake an exploration mission to the Jupiter solar system during 2030,Li said. (ECNS)

Leaders of Koreas agree on further steps toward peace, denuclearization at summit

The top leaders of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and South Korea signed a joint declaration in Pyongyang on Wednesday, agreeing on further steps toward denuclearization and concrete peace moves on the Korean Peninsula, including setting up buffer zones on their borders.

"The September declaration will open a higher level for the improvement in relations (between the DPRK and South Korea) ... and bring closer the era of peace and prosperity," Kim Jong Un told the press conference at the state guest house Paekhwawon on Wednesday soon after their second round of talks.

Kim said that he wished to make the Korean Peninsula nuclear-free and that the DPRK is willing to take further steps toward the peninsula's denuclearization if the US takes corresponding actions.

Under the joint declaration, the DPRK said it is willing to continue with additional steps toward denuclearization such as the permanen t destruction of its main Yongbyon nuclear facility if the US takes corresponding actions in line with the spirit of the DPRK-US agreement reached at a summit in Singapore in June.

During the joint press conference, Moon Jae-in said that both leaders discussed the steps toward denuclearization for the first time. They also agreed on steps to end military tensions by transforming the inter-Korean border into a peace zone.

The DPRK "has agreed to permanently shut down its Dongchang-ri missile engine testing facility and missile launch pad under the participation of experts from related countries," Moon said. (Xinhua)

EU summit to defuse migrant tension, set Brexit countdown

European leaders gathered Wednesday for a summit to put migration tensions behind them and to set up the final stretch of Brexit talks.

EU top officials will face intense pressure in the coming weeks to finalize on a divorce deal and a plan for future ties with Britain to avoid a chaotic exit in March.

The two-day summit plans to ease migration tensions after a summer showdown with Italy's populist government.

Italy repeatedly turned away rescue ships carrying hundreds of African migrants that forced other member states to share in the responsibilities. (AFP)

Malaysian authorities arrest Najib Razak to face charges

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the deposit of RM2.6 billion ($627.6 million) of 1MDB funds into his personal account.

Razak will be charged on Thursday. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said in a statement that Razak was in custody at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya. (People's Daily app)

Chinese aviation company completes maiden flight

General-purpose plane GA20, developed by Guanyi Aero, China's first private aviation integrated service enterprise, took off on the morning of September 19, reports thepaper.cn on Wednesday.

The plane took off at 11:53 am at Yaohu Airport in Nanchang, the capital city of China's Jiangxi Province and landed at 12:19 pm, successfully completing its first flight.

Equipped with a widely recognized engine and avionics system, the plane’s wingspan in 9.4 meters with a body stretching 8.1 meters.

The plane can be used for various purposes, including training, private flights, and sight-seeing. (China Plus)
