China, Solomon Islands establish diplomatic ties

China and the Solomon Islands signed a joint communique in Beijing Saturday on the establishment of diplomatic relations.

The communique was signed by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Solomon Islands' Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Jeremiah Manele after they held talks.

The communique stated that the two countries have decided to recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level effective from the date of signature of this communique, in keeping with the interests and desires of the two peoples.

China and the Solomon Islands agree to develop friendly relations on the basis of the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence. (Xinhua)

China, US conclude vice-ministerial level trade talks in Washington

China and the United States held vice ministerial-level trade talks on Thursday and Friday, and conducted constructive discussions on economic and trade issues of mutual concern.

The two sides also carefully discussed the specific arrangement for the 13th round of China-US high-level economic and trade consultations scheduled for October in Washington. The two sides agreed to continue to maintain communication on related issues. (Xinhua)

Iran displays debris of downed US drones

Iran on Saturday displayed the debris of recently downed drones by its air defense system.

In the showcase, called Hunting Vultures, Iran also displayed the remaining pieces of a US military drone downed by the country's air defense system in June in its southern waters.

On June 21, Iran announced that it had downed a US RQ-4 Global Hawk "spy drone" which had violated Iranian airspace near the Strait of Hormuz. (Xinhua)

India, Pakistan troops exchange fire on Kashmir LoC

Troops of India and Pakistan on Saturday resorted to heavy fire and mortar shelling on the Line of Control dividing Kashmir, officials said.

New Delhi and Islamabad accuse each other of resorting to unprovoked firings and violating cease-fire agreements. 

Locals said there has been an increase in cease-fire violations since Aug. 5 when the Indian government decided to abrogate Article 370 of its constitution. The move stripped Indian-controlled Kashmir of its separate flag and constitution. (Xinhua)

4 Chinese tourists dead, over 20 injured in tour bus crash in Utah, US

Four Chinese tourists died and over 20 were injured in a tour bus crash near Bryce Canyon National Park in the US state of Utah on Friday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP).

A total of 31 people were on the bus including the driver. All 30 passengers were Chinese nationals, according to the update of the UHP on Friday night.

The Chinese Embassy in the United States said in a statement that it has been in touch with local police for further details regarding the accident and has dispatched an emergency team to provide assistance for the victims. (Xinhua)

Google plans to invest 3 billion euros in Europe

Google’s top boss said Friday the tech giant is planning to invest 3 billion euros to expand its data centers across Europe in the next two years.

Chief executive Sundar Pichai says it will bring the company’s total investments in the continent’s internet infrastructure to 15 billion euros since 2007.

Pichai met with Finnish Prime Minister Antii Rinne on Friday in Helsinki and said the investments will support 13,000 full-time jobs in the European Union every year. (AP)

'Largest polar expedition in history' to probe Arctic climate

A team of scientists from 19 countries set off for the Arctic on Friday, aiming to freeze their ship into the polar ice for a year to research the changing climate.

Aboard the massive icebreaker Polarstern, belonging to Germany's Alfred Wegener polar and marine research institute, researchers hope to glean new understanding of the region.

The mission will study the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, ecosystem and natural processes -- looking to build a picture of how climate change is affecting the region and the entire world. (AFP)
