Electricity is back on for more than 24,000 households who suffered temporary power outage due to the 5.4-magnitude earthquake in Southwest China's Sichuan Province on Sunday, local authorities said.

As of 9 pm Sunday evening, 4,781 people had been dispatched for rescue work, medical aid, firefighting, order maintenance, power restoration and traffic control to Weiyuan County’s Neijiang.

The quake jolted Weiyuan at 6:42 am Sunday, and killed one person and injured 63 others. (Xinhua)

China will issue a coin set on September 10 commemorating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the central bank said.

The set includes two gold and four silver coins, and one copper alloy coin, all legal tender, according to statement on the People's Bank of China website.

The coins feature the national emblem on one side, and are inscribed with Chinese characters that read "the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC" on the other side. (Xinhua)

Trump said he canceled secret Taliban meeting at Camp David

US President Donald Trump said he canceled a secret weekend meeting at Camp David with Taliban and Afghanistan leaders after a bombing in the past week in Kabul that killed 12 people, including an American soldier, and has called off peace negotiations with the insurgent group.

Trump's tweet Saturday evening was surprising because it would mean that the president was ready to host members of the Taliban at the presidential retreat in Maryland just days before the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Canceling the talks also goes against Trump's pledge to withdraw the remaining 14,000 US troops from Afghanistan and end US involvement in a conflict that is closing in on 18 years. (AP)

Opera union launches investigation into Domingo allegations

The union that represents opera performers and staff has launched an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against superstar Placido Domingo, saying it cannot be sure that opera companies will delve into them sufficiently themselves.

The American Guild of Musical Artists said its investigation was prompted by two Associated Press stories in which multiple women accused the opera legend of sexual harassment or other inappropriate conduct.

The Los Angeles Opera, where Domingo has served as general director since 2003, has hired outside counsel to conduct an investigation but has declined to disclose any details about how it will be conducted or whether the results will be made public. (AP)

Dinosaur T. rex had built-in 'air conditioner' in skull: study

US researchers found that Tyrannosaurus rex, a carnivorous dinosaur, had a built-in "air conditioner" in its skull to keep it cool.

The study published in the latest edition of the Anatomical Record showed that the two large holes at the roof of the T. rex skull, previously believed filled with muscles to aid jaw movements, were not wholly muscular but instead housed vascular tissues that helped T. rex regulate its temperature.

The immense body heat of large animals tends to overwhelm them in hot conditions, so they need a method to cool down, according to the researchers. (Xinhua)

China's FIBA World Cup run ends with Nigeria loss

China failed to pull off a miracle as they lost 86-73 to Nigeria in their last game at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in South China's Guangdong Province on Sunday night.

As Iran claimed a big win over the Philippines 95-75 to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, China failed to capitalize on the opportunity on home soil.

Yi Jianlian, China's Number 1 star, stood out in the third quarter to put down 14 points in the third quarter.

Unfortunately, China did not have enough strength to match Nigeria in defense.

The team finished the World Cup at home with two wins and three losses. (CGTN)
