A vehicle waiting at the entrance of the Hebei Shenghua Chemical Co exploded, ignited the surrounding vehicles, and leading to the deaths of 22 people, an employee of the Zhangjiakou Municipal authority told the news website thepaper.cn.
An employee surnamed Wu with Zhangjiakou City Safety Production Supervision Administration said that evidence including the identities of drivers of these vehicles and the identities of all casualties are being verified.
The specific cause of the explosion yet to be found. Experts are on the way to conduct onsite investigations and there has not been a second explosion.

Twenty-two people were killed and 22 others wounded in an explosion at a chemical factory in Zhangjiakou, North China’s Hebei Province.
The injured are hospitalized.
After midnight on Wednesday, an explosion occurred in the vicinity of Hebei Shenghua Chemical Co in Qiaodong District, Zhangjiakou.
Thirty-eight large trucks and 12 small cars fought the fire in the accident, according to preliminary investigation. On-site search and rescue work and investigation on the cause of the accident are still under intense progress.
The public should avoid the accident scene to make rescue work more orderly.
