Su Yiming jumped onto the men's snowboard platform in Beijing's Shougang Park to become the youngest snowboard champion in the history of the Winter Olympics and the first Chinese athlete to win the Winter Olympics snowboarding gold medal.
Su was born in the city of Jilin, Jilin Province, in 2004. With his parents' support, Su first tried snowboarding at the age of four.
At the age of six, Su had become better at snowboarding than his parents.
After seeing an internet video of Su skiing, director Tsui Hark invited him to play the role of Little Shuanzi in the patriotic movie The Taking of Tiger Mountain.
Su landed more movie and TV roles: Baobei in Rock Kid, Shui An in Tracks in the Snowy Forest and Young Guo Xiaohai in A Splendid Life in Beijing.
At 17, Su made one of the biggest decisions of his life: to pause his acting career and pursue a professional snowboarding career.
Su's snowboarding career was not all plain sailing. At 15, Su participated in his first World Cup. He finished a disappointing 11th in the preliminaries, but incorporated that failure into his plan to perform better in the future.
Before the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, Su practiced hundreds of movements on an air mattress. Hard work empowered 17-year-old Su to win the gold medal one round ahead of schedule with two 1,800-degree moves.
The Beijing Winter Olympics do not mark the end of Su's snowboarding career. The 18-year-old will continue to hit the piste and build on his legend.
