Clashes broke out in Sha Tin, a northern suburb of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Protesters vandalized street rails and tossed bricks, umbrellas and helmets at riot police. Thirteen police officers were taken to the hospital, and five of them remain hospitalized.

The suspects, 29 males and 18 females, are also accused of holding an unauthorized rally, obstructing law enforcement and possessing offensive weapons, the police said in a statement on Monday.

The statement condemned the surge in violent acts of protesters as a huge blow to the rule of law in Hong Kong, and the police vowed to investigate the case and to hold the perpetrators accountable.
