Hong Kong police issued a statement on its official Facebook page on Tuesday on the standoff between police and protesters at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

"In pursuit of a peaceful solution to diffuse the situation, the Police have communicated with the school and are arranging a retreat to stop the standoff," Hong Kong police said in the statement.

A Specialized Crowd Management Vehicle is on standby at the scene and will be deployed to assist a retreat if necessary, police added.

At the same time, police persuaded the protesters not to throw objects onto Tolo Highway and MTR track.
