A homemade bomb appeared for the first time in this year's Hong Kong protests when an improvised explosive device (RCIED), controlled remotely from a mobile phone, was detonated just two meters away from a police vehicle in Mong Kok district on the night of October 13.

Such tactics, represented by the IED, bear a high resemblance to terrorist acts, according to a police statement during a routine press conference.

In a separate case, a number of rioters threw up to 20 Molotov cocktails within 20 seconds towards the Mong Kok police department.

Hong Kong police on Monday strongly condemned the rioters' widespread destructive acts during protests over the weekend, such as smashing shops, vandalizing metro stations, throwing petrol bombs and attacking police officers.

The police arrested a total of 201 people from October 11 to 13, aged from 14 to 62, and vowed to continue to take resolute enforcement action to safeguard the city's public safety and bring all lawbreakers to justice.
