HONG KONG, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong police have eliminated a wartime bomb in Happy Valley area of Hong Kong Island, and no casualties or property losses were reported during the bomb elimination process that lasted for about 12 hours.

Hong Kong police said the bomb, found on Saturday noon at a construction site, was left over by the U.S. army during World War II. It was about 1.3 meters in length, 0.4 meter in diameter and 1,000 pounds (about 450 kg) in weight.

About 300 residents nearby were evacuated and roads were temporarily closed as the police decided to handle the bomb on the spot.

It was not the first time that wartime bombs were found in Hong Kong, which was occupied by Japan between 1941 and 1945. In 2014, an AN-M66 bomb of the U.S. army weighing more than 900 kg was discovered also in Happy Valley.
