The last remaining member of the search and rescue canine unit used throughout the aftermath of the Wenchuan earthquake died on September 17.

Known to many as Silver Tiger, the 13-year-old heroic canine received many honors for his service.

Beginning in 2006, Silver Tiger participated in several rescue operations, helping to save many lives. He later received a lifetime achievement award for his acts of heroism. 

As old age began to set in, during his final years, he lived peacefully at his fire station base under the constant care of his trainer. 

Silver Tiger will be made into a specimen to commemorate his contributions.
