Lhasa (People's Daily) -- Yuan Dan, January 1 of the Gregorian calendar, is commonly known as “New Year's Day” in most countries of the world. Yuan means “beginning” which is the first of something; and Dan means “day” so Yuan Dan means “initial day.”

In Chinese history, Yuan Dan has had a lot of names including Yuan Ri, Yuan Zheng, Yuan Chen, Kai Nian, Yuan Chun, Shang Ri and Hua Sui, but Yuan Dan is the most common of these names and has been used for a longer time.

On January 1, family and friends travel together to usher in 2020. Facing the cold winds of the plateau, the “Ge Sang Flowers” female inspectors of the Lhasa entry and exit inspection station march to the port energetically and enthusiastically as they prepare to process the first batch of outbound tourists of the new decade through customs.

As for New Year's day duty, Cithy Lhamo said, “since becoming immigration officers, we have been prepared not to go home during the holidays and it is especially comforting to think that we can help passengers travel safely.

“Although I can't spend the holiday with my family, I share a special feeling with so many brothers, sisters and tourists.”

In order to actively cope with the peak passenger flow on New Year's Day, the Ge Sang Flowers cannot afford to relax.

They use technology to make processing passengers more efficient.

They also politely suggest to passengers that they can contact border police if they have any issues with the customs clearance process while either entering or leaving the country.
