Macao hotel guests number down by 2.0 pct in November 2019

MACAO, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1.16 million guests checked into Macao's hotels and guesthouses in November 2019, down by 2.0 percent year-on-year, the special administrative region (SAR)'s statistics department said here on Sunday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) showed that the guests coming from Chinese mainland (797,000) decreased by 4.0 percent, while those from South Korea (42,000), Hong Kong SAR (140,000) and China's Taiwan region (37,000) grew by 5.1 percent, 24.5 percent and 9.6 percent respectively.

There were 121 hotels and guesthouses operating at the end of November 2019, an increase of five year-on-year. The number of available guest rooms reduced by 1.7 percent to 38,000 due to renovations undertaken in some hotels.

The average occupancy rate of guest rooms went down by 2.2 percentage points year-on-year to 91.8 percent. The rates of three-star hotels (94.5 percent) and five-star hotels (92.9 percent) dropped by 0.8 percentage points and 2.3 percentage points respectively.

The average length of stay of guests was 1.5 nights, up by 0.1 night year-on-year, the DSEC report added.

In the first eleven months of 2019, guests of hotels and guesthouses totaled 12.88 million, an increase of 1.4 percent year-on-year.

The average occupancy rate of guest rooms (90.7 percent) and the average length of guests stay (1.5 nights) both held steady year-on-year.

Visitor-guests accounted for 71.8 percent of the total overnight visitors, up slightly by 0.1 percentage point.
