A Chinese spokesperson warned on Wednesday against the planned visit of Taiwan regional leader Tsai Ing-wen to the US and collusion between US politicians and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks at a media conference in response to Tsai's trip to North and Central America, at the end of which she is likely to meet US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
"This so-called transit by the Taiwan leader is essentially a provocative act that aims to seek independence relying on the US," Zhu told the conference.
"If she [Tsai] contacts McCarthy, it will be another provocation that seriously violates the one-China principle and undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," the spokesperson said.
"We firmly oppose this and will take resolute countermeasures," she said.
The spokesperson urged the US to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, and earnestly deliver on its commitment of not supporting "Taiwan independence.”
Reportedly, Tsai will travel from March 29 to April 7, stopping in New York before heading to the two Central American countries Guatemala and Belize and transiting through Los Angeles on the return leg.
