Man sentenced to death with 2-year reprieve for attacking eye doctor in Beijing hospital

A man who injured four people, including an eye doctor, in a Beijing hospital was sentenced to death with two-year reprieve on Tuesday for the crime of attempted homicide, as his behavior caused a very bad social impact.

The man, named Cui Zhenguo, took a knife with him to the Beijing Chaoyang Hospital on January 20, 2020, with the intention of taking revenge on Tao Yong, as he was unsatisfied with the results Tao’s treatment of his eye disease.

Cui attacked Tao in the head, neck and arms, causing serious injury. He also attacked three others who tried to stop him from attacking the doctor, according to the court.

After the attack, Cui asked people at the scene to call the police and then waited for them to arrive. However, his behavior had a very bad social impact and should be dealt with seriously, the court said.

On December 29, 2019, China's top legislature adopted a law to improve basic medical and health care, including protecting the safety of medical personnel. It is also the country's first fundamental and comprehensive legislation on basic medical and health care, which will take effect on June 1.
