The Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that the decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on the qualification of members of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong is rational, reasonable and consistent with laws, and other countries have no right to make unwarranted accusations on or meddle in the issue.

Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a daily news conference that the decision is a necessary move to stay committed to and improve the "one country, two systems" framework, as well as to implement the Hong Kong Basic Law and the National Security Law for Hong Kong.

It also is a necessary move to safeguard the rule of law and constitutional order of the region, Wang said.

According to the decision, LegCo members shall be disqualified for office once they are determined by law to have failed to meet the legal requirements of upholding the HKSAR Basic Law and honoring the pledge of allegiance to the HKSAR.

We firmly support the HKSAR government in fulfilling its duties according to the laws, he said. Those who violate the law must be held responsible, which is the basic principle of any society under the rule of law, he added.

"Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, and the issue of qualification of Hong Kong LegCo members is China's domestic affair," Wang stressed.
