Today marks the seventh anniversary of the middle route of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Nearly 7.3 billion cubic meters of water have traveled about 1,276km and been transported to Beijing from the south, bringing enormous economic, social and ecological benefits to the capital, according to the Beijing Water Authority.

Starting 2014, Beijing's water shortage since the 1990s has been alleviated to a great extent, and more than 13 million people have benefited from the project directly.
Though the project largely helps alleviate the water shortage in Beijing, the gap between the city’s supply and demand hasn’t been properly handled. The water resource per person in the city is about 150 cubic meters, requiring measures for water use in an environmentally friendly way.
