The new episode of PD Studio features Nicholas Rosellini, UN Resident Coordinator and highest-level representative of the UN in China. Having worked in China for three years, he described the country as one full of vigor and vitality.
"I think if I look ahead in terms of how the economy will look around the world in 5 years, 10 years or 15 years, China is really already anticipating the kind of trends that will happen and how to restructure the workforce to take advantage of that so people can benefit from economic trends and not feel threatened by them," Rosellini said.
2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the United Nations in China. With the rise of China in the global arena, China's role in the UN is also shifting. As the second largest economy in the world, China is also the second largest contributor to the United Nations in terms of the assessed contributions. It's also playing a very important role in terms of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, he added.
Rosellini believes China's poverty alleviation efforts are most impressive as 800 million people have been lifted out of poverty. During the past three years since he worked in China, he went to many places in China, and witnessed numerous cases about how the local governments resolved the problem concerning "the last mile in poverty elimination", in which China did a good job in crafting relevant policies to the local conditions in various regions.
In terms of South-South cooperation, he cited the energy sector as an area in which developing countries would be able to draw lessons from China, as the world's second largest economy has been a pioneer in using renewable energy and promoting a low-carbon lifestyle
