Britain, EU enter make-or-break Brexit week

Brexit.jpg

Britain and the European Union entered a pivotal week that will determine if they are still on course to reach amicable divorce terms -- and when Brexit might finally occur.

Queen Elizabeth II is due to step into the fray by performing her ceremonial duty of informing parliament about the government's agenda for the coming year.

But the odds of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's tenure lasting that long will depend largely on the outcome of hurried discussions held behind closed doors in Brussels around the same time. (AFP)

sun.jpeg

Chinese Olympic champion Sun Yang will face a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing on Nov 15, and it will be an open hearing as he had demanded, Zhang Qihuai, Sun's legal representative, said.

The court will hold a hearing for Sun in Montreux, Switzerland, and the media and the public will be allowed to attend the hearing, Zhang said on his Sina Weibo account on Sunday night.

The public hearing will restore the faith in justice and fairness, and Sun will back his case with facts to prove that he has no problems in the procedure, Zhang added.

The 27-year-old is facing a CAS hearing over an incident last September at his home in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, when he rejected a doping test after questioning the credentials of testers. (China Daily)

And Syria's Kurds have announced a groundbreaking deal with Damascus on a Syrian troop deployment near the border with Turkey.

This, as Ankara presses a deadly cross-border offensive that has sparked an international outcry.

The announcement came as the US ordered the withdrawal of almost its entire ground force in Syria.

The Kurds feel they have been betrayed by the US and left to fend for themselves in the battle against Turkish forces.

The massively outgunned Kurds described their deal with the Syrian government as a necessary step to stop the assault. (AFP)
