President Xi congratulates 9th Beijing Xiangshan Forum
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for efforts to strengthen mutual trust and military cooperation and to defend international security, amid rising challenges of hegemony, power politics and unilateralism.
While peaceful development and win-win cooperation are irreversible trends, with the rising challenges, Xi said there's a long way to realizing common security and development.
Over the past 70 years, Xi explained that China has achieved tremendous growth and has become a defender of world peace.

China's top legislature starts bimonthly session
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, started its bimonthly session on Monday to review multiple draft laws and revisions, including a draft law on encryption and a draft revision to the Forest Law.
Other legislative documents include a draft section on marriage and family of the civil code, a draft law on community corrections, a draft biosecurity law, as well as draft revisions to the Minors Protection Law, the Law on the Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency and the Archives Law, according to the agenda.
The NPC Standing Committee will also deliberate a draft decision on the National Supervisory Commission's formulation of supervisory regulations.
The legislative session will run from Oct. 21 to 26. (Xinhua)

Chile extends curfew as death toll in unrest rises to seven
Five people died when a garment factory was torched by looters near Santiago.
That brought the death toll in a wave of unrest in Chile to seven.
This, as authorities extended a curfew into a second consecutive night.
Police and the military fired tear gas and used water cannons against protesters, as clashes over price hikes and social inequality raged through a third day.
Almost all public transport in the capital of seven million people was paralyzed on Sunday, with shops shuttered and many flights in and out of Santiago's international airport cancelled. (AFP)

Chinese firms see over 270 bln yuan cut in social insurance contributions in Jan-Sept
China has seen a significant cut in social insurance premiums paid by businesses amid government efforts to reduce corporate burden, official data showed Monday.
In the first nine months, employers have seen 272.5 billion yuan (38.55 billion U.S. dollars) less paid in basic aged-care insurance contributions, unemployment insurance and work injury compensation insurance premiums, Lu Aihong, spokesperson for the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, said at a press conference.
The government lowered the share borne by employers for urban workers' basic age-care insurance down to 16 percent from 20 percent starting from May 1, as part of a policy package that reduces social insurance contributions of enterprises.
China aims to reduce the tax burdens and social insurance contributions of enterprises by nearly 2 trillion yuan this year, according to a government work report. (Xinhua)

20 killed in Kenya floods as authorities predict more rains
Twenty people have died following heavy rain in Kenya over the past few weeks.
The Kenya Red Cross said torrential rain displaced more than 20,000 households around the East African country and left a trail of destruction.
Fears are rife that the numbers could go higher.
Weathermen have warned that more rain is likely to increase in parts of the northeast, the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the southeast lowlands and the coast. (CGTN)

All Tencent games to be equipped with anti-addiction system within year
All of the games developed by Tencent will be equipped with an anti-addiction system to prevent juvenile users from indulging, according to the company's COO Ren Yuxin.
Games that fail to meet the requirement by the end of the year will be taken down, Ren said Sunday at the on-going World Internet Conference.
Ren said Tencent has rolled out a set of measures since 2017 to ensure a healthy online experience for juveniles, whose game time and consumption have been obviously contained.
The internet giant has launched another big data-based project to eliminate toxic content on short video and live-broadcasting platforms, he added. (Xinhua)

Missing Chinese tourist confirmed dead in New Zealand's national park
And abody found in the Tongariro National Park in New Zealand was confirmed to be the Chinese tourist who had gone missing during the weekend.
New Zealand Police found a body in the search for a missing 51-year-old woman on Sunday afternoon.
Police said the woman was part of a group of four, who set out Friday morning to hike around the Tongariro Northern Circuit walk, one of New Zealand's Great Walks.
Her friends reported her overdue on Sunday morning, after she did not return on Saturday evening as planned. (Xinhua)
