Mainland sends condolences over Taiwan train derailment

Mainland authorities mourned those who died in a passenger train derailment in Taiwan Sunday afternoon, and sent condolences to their families and the injured.

Officials of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office and the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits said the mainland has paid close attention to the accident.

At least 18 people died and 187 were injured. Two female passengers from the mainland were among the injured. (Xinhua)

Saudi royals offer condolences to missing journalist's family

Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have called the son of Jamal Khashoggi to express condolences to the family of the missing Saudi journalist over his death.

Saleh Khashoggi, the son, thanked the royals for their condolences.

The elder Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post, has been missing since he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey on Oct. 2.

The kingdom said early Saturday that Khashoggi had died in a "brawl" in its consulate but did not explain the cause of his death.  (Xinhua)

Beijing to promote intelligent connected vehicle industry

A white paper released by Beijing authorities said the city government will commit to promoting the intelligent connected vehicle industry and related industries.

The industry is projected to be worth 100 billion yuan by 2022.

The paper said Beijing will advance innovation and research on ICVs to ensure they can be used for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

A 50,000-hectare pilot zone will be established and over 2,000 kilometers of roads will be earmarked in Beijing for testing ICVs.

The white paper said the city will also accelerate construction of an intelligent traffic system and the Internet of Vehicles. (Xinhua)

Russia to react to U.S. moves after its withdrawal from INF Treaty: Russian MP

Russia will respond to actual moves of the US following its withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty instead of the withdrawal itself.

That’s according to a Russian lawmaker.

Konstantin Kosachev, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Russia's Federation Council, said Russia should respond not to Washington's withdrawal from the treaty but to its practical steps when it is free to do whatever it wants.

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump said that Washington would pull out of the INF Treaty on account of Russia's alleged breach of the agreement. (Xinhua)

S. Korea, DPRK, UN Command hold 2nd consultation on disarming JSA in border area

South Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United Nations Command held their second consultation on disarming the Joint Security Area in the inter-Korean border area.

The closed-door consultation was held in the Freedom House.

That’s a building controlled by South Korea in the border village of Panmunjom inside the Demilitarized Zone.

The first one was held on Oct. 16.

The consultation was made to discuss the disarmament of the JSA, which was agreed upon by defense chiefs of the two Koreas during the Pyongyang summit in September between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and top DPRK leader Kim Jong-un. (Xinhua)

'We failed them': Australia apologises to child sex abuse victims

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison issued a national apology to victims of child sex abuse in an emotional address to parliament.

He admitted that the state failed to stop "evil dark crimes" committed over decades.

The state apology comes after a five-year Royal Commission that detailed more than 15,000 survivors' harrowing child sex abuse claims involving thousands of institutions. (AFP)

China's civil service to open 14,500 vacancies in annual intake

And China plans to recruit over 14,500 civil servants for 75 central government agencies and 20 institutions directly under them in the 2019 civil servant intake.

Applications will be open from Oct. 22 to Oct. 31, with positions to be posted on authorized websites. 

The annual recruitment sees fewer vacancies this year than in 2017, in which more than 28,000 vacancies were offered. (Xinhua)
