China to accelerate legislation of new foreign investment law

China will accelerate its new foreign investment law amid efforts to boost investment liberalization.

The country’s Ministry of Commerce said the new law is expected to combine the country's three foreign investment laws to promote and protect foreign investment. 

It said it will stick to policies of high-standard liberalization and facilitation of trade and investment, and significantly ease market access for foreign companies.

The UN says China was the largest recipient of foreign direct investment in the first half of 2018, even as global FDI in the same period slumped to a 10-year low.(Xinhua)

Pentagon to send about 800 troops to US-Mexico border

The Pentagon is expected to deploy about 800 troops to the US-Mexico border.

This, after President Donald Trump said the military would help tackle a "national emergency" and called on a caravan of US-bound migrants to turn around.

The active-duty troops would augment the 2,000 or so National Guardsmen already deployed to support operations on the border, and could come from multiple military bases around the US.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was expected to sign orders either Thursday or Friday for the new deployment.

The troops would include doctors and engineers, and would be used mainly to provide logistical support.(AFP)

China's top court supports criminal punishment in anti-doping fight

The illegal manufacture and sale of performance-enhancing substances could soon face criminal punishment in China.

This, as the country's Supreme Court vowed to fight  doping.

A judge on China's Supreme People's Court told the WADA Global Education Conference that the court is

studying and drawing up judicial interpretations on the application of law in handling criminal cases related to the use, manufacture, sale and smuggling of performance-enhancing substances.

China has been working to promote anti-doping legislation, after the State Council launched the Anti-Doping Regulation in 2004.(Xinhua)

Saudi journalist Khashoggi's son arrives in US: report

The son of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has left Saudi Arabia and arrived in the US on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, a U.S. State Department spokesperson revealed that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had urged the Saudi government to release restrictions on Salah during his visit to Riyadh a week ago

A White House spokeswoman said that President Donald Trump received a briefing from CIA director Gina Haspel after her trip to Turkey to investigate the case.

After denying for two weeks, Riyadh admitted last Saturday that the journalist was killed during a physical fight with the people in the Saudi consulate, but did not give any explanation about the cause of his death.(Xinhua)

Google says fired 48 for sexual harassment over two years

Google said it had fired 48 employees in the past two years as a result of sexual harassment allegations.

The US tech giant issued the statement from chief executive Sundar Pichai in response to a New York Times report that one senior Google employee received an exit package worth $90 million as he faced allegations of misconduct, and that Google had covered up other claims of sexual harassment.

Google released an email sent to employees from Pichai stating that 48 people had been terminated for sexual harassment in the past two years, including 13 who were senior managers and above and that none received "an exit package."(AFP)

6.8-magnitude earthquake rocks Zante and west coast of Greece

A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit western Greece early Friday.

Greece said no casualties have been reported so far.

The strong quake hit the island early Friday morning followed by a 5.6-magnitude aftershock and a 5.1-magnitude tremor that struck the same area 16 minutes and 29 minutes later, respectively.

The tremor has caused material damage and electricity cuts and prompted residents to run outside.

Greek seismologists said the quake was most likely the main tremor.(Xinhua)

Portrait by AI program sells for $432,000

And an artwork created by an artificially-intelligent program has been sold at auction for $432,000.

The final price is far higher than the $7,000-$10,000 estimate put on it by Christie's in New York before the sale.

The painting was created by a Paris-based art collective. 

The portrait was made using ink, canvas and an artificial intelligence algorithm, and was signed with a math equation.(People's Daily app)
