Democrats rode a wave of dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump to win control of the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, giving them the opportunity to block Trump's agenda and open his administration to intense scrutiny.

In midterm elections two years after he won the White House, Trump and his fellow Republicans expanded their majority in the US Senate following a divisive campaign marked by fierce clashes over race, immigration and other cultural issues.

The newly empowered House Democrats will have the ability to investigate Trump's tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and allegations involving his 2016 campaign's links to Russia. (China Daily)

The British government raced to build on a chance of a Brexit compromise on Northern Ireland.

But Prime Minister Theresa May promised her party she would not strike a deal with the EU “at any cost.”

Negotiations have stepped up with Brussels as London seeks a divorce agreement within weeks, to allow time for it to be passed by parliament before Brexit day on March 29, 2019.

The Irish government opened the door to a possible concession on the final sticking point – how to avoid border checks between British Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

But British euroskeptics fear May is planning to give too much ground.

Her Northern Irish allies warned that unless the EU moved further, Britain could leave with no deal at all. (Xinhua)

French President Emmanuel Macron called for a "real European army" as the continent marks a century since the divisions of World War I.

This, to better defend itself against Russia and even the US.

Macron said Europe needed to reduce its dependence on American might, not least after US President Donald Trump announced he was pulling out of a Cold War-era nuclear treaty.

The EU launched a joint multi-billion-euro defense fund last year designed to develop Europe's military capacities, and make the continent more strategically independent.

France has also spearheaded the creation of a nine-country force designed to be capable of rapidly mounting a joint military operation, an evacuation from a warzone, or providing aid in a natural disaster. (AFP)
