Bridge construction halted after 36 Chinese sturgeons die

The construction of a Miyue Bridge in Jingzhou, Hubei Province was suspended, though the suspension order can be tracked to early 2018, after 36 rare Chinese sturgeons were found dead.

The bridge contractor hired by Ji’nan Ecological Cultural Tourism Zone drained up part of the surrounding waters of a sturgeon breeding base during the construction, which resulted in sturgeon deaths, according to a joint report released by the supervisory office of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on the Yangtze River basin and the Agriculture Department of Hubei Province.

The dead Chinese sturgeons in the tourism zone belonged to first filial generation considered “extremely precious.”

In a letter drafted in September by Hubei bureau of aquatic products to Jingzhou Municipal Government, the noise, shake and water quality deterioration caused by construction contributed to the deaths of sturgeons.

The Chinese sturgeon, has been classified as "China's Class One Protected Animals" since the 1970s. It is also called a "national treasure" much like its mammal counterpart, the giant panda. (People’s Daily app)

Country's tax climate to improve with more reductions expected

A World Bank report says China's efforts to further reduce taxes for businesses and individuals will continue to improve the country's tax environment if the significant progress made since 2017 is any indication.

The report said China's tax climate has improved remarkably, particularly regarding the time needed to comply and the number of tax payments required, mainly because of technology-based enhancement of tax collection services.

Experts expect more tax- and fee-reduction policies to come out soon, such as the reduction of social security fees for firms.

These could continually enhance China's position in global tax environment rankings, based on World Bank research methodology. (China Daily)

Aid group: 85,000 children may have died of hunger in Yemen

An estimated 85,000 children under age 5 may have died of hunger and disease since the outbreak of Yemen's civil war in 2015, an international aid group said Wednesday.

Save the Children said the "conservative" estimate is based on average mortality rates for Severe Acute Malnutrition, which the UN says has afflicted more than 1.3 million children since a Saudi-led coalition went to war with Yemen's Houthi rebels in March 2015.

Save the Children's Yemen director, says: "For every child killed by bombs and bullets, dozens are starving to death and it's entirely preventable," adding that "children who die in this way suffer immensely."

The war and a Saudi-led blockade have created the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with more than 8 million people at risk of starvation. (AP)

He has also attacked the probe, calling it a "hoax" or "witch hunt." (Xinhua)

A district health authority in Nanchang, East China's Jiangxi province, issued a fine of 2,000 yuan ($288) on a luxury hotel with shoddy cleaning practices exposed in a viral video.

A Chinese blogger, published an 11-minute video titled "The Secrets of Cups" on Weibo on Nov 14, exposing hygiene problems in 14 luxury hotels in China.

The public health service center of Honggutan district in Nanchang started an investigation into the Sheraton Nanchang Hotel on Nov 16, and on Tuesday it published the results.

"Through the investigation, we have not found major violations of law and regulations, but a few workers did not obey the rules," the official said.

The fine was made due to the problems exposed in the video, not because of problems found in the field investigation, the official said.

Health authorities in cities have launched investigations into the hygiene claims, but most have not publicized the results.

Health officials in Beijing's Dongcheng, Haidian and Chaoyang districts collected samples from the four hotels shown in the video for examination. (China Daily)
