Short videos spur China's tourism industry, create new economic model

Short videos, which are gaining popularity in China, have been adopted by many places across the country as an effective tool to market their tourism resources. Industry insiders said that a new economic model has been created thanks to these platforms.

China’s huge number of users provide the industry with promising prospects, and some videos even experience hundreds of millions of clicks after being uploaded, said a recent report.

It also predicted that the number of active users of video-sharing apps is expected to reach 350 million by 2018.

A woman surnamed Liu from southeast China's Fujian province said that, attracted by the scenic spots in short videos, she is planning a trip to the Tibetan areas of Sichuan, though she didn’t enjoy traveling before.

Given the popularity of short videos, many travel agencies and tourism authorities have introduced tourist products featured in video-sharing apps or registered accounts on these platforms to promote themselves.

Not long ago, Zhangjiajie, a picturesque tourist spot in central China, launched a video collection campaign on live-video streaming start-up Kuaishou to promote its tourism resources. The event attracted 270 million participants in one week.

Dunhuang, a renowned tourist destination in Northwest China, also promotes its local culture and customs on another well-know platform, Douyin, also known as Tik Tok, to lure potential visitors.

These video-sharing platforms are believed to help find new points in a city, as locals and out-of-towners often have different ways of perceiving a place.

Shan Shibing, a reporter from Chongqing Daily, said that the buildings on the mountainside in Chongqing, which locals regard as ordinary, are beautiful sceneries in the eyes of visitors.

But he said that these platforms can help visitors learn about a place in a more convenient way, but a city’s attraction ultimately lies in its tourism resources and cultural connotation.
