Zelensky wins Ukraine's presidential election

Exit polls show that Ukrainian comedian Volodymyr Zelensky won the country's presidential election by a landslide in the second round.

The polls show 73 percent voted for Zelensky while only 25 percent for incumbent President Petro Poroshenko.

The results of the second round will be announced by the Central Election Commission by May 1, and the new president is expected to take office no later than June 3. (Xinhua)

Death toll in Sri Lanka blast attacks rises to 290, 24 suspects arrested: police

Sri Lanka Police announced on Monday an increase in the death toll in a series of explosions to at least 290, with 500 injured.

24 suspects have been arrested in connection with the explosions. They are currently in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

One Chinese national was confirmed dead and five Chinese missing, according to the Chinese Embassy in Colombo.

Five Chinese were injured with two seriously, according to the Embassy. (People’s Daily app)

Huawei reports $26.8 billion for Q1

Huawei reported revenue of $28.6 billion in the first quarter of the year.

That’s up 39 percent year-on-year.

It likewise reported an 8 percent net profit increase.

As of March, Huawei had received 40 orders for 5G commercial bookings with the world's leading operators, and over 70,000 base stations for 5G have been sent for deployment. 

It said it shipped more than 59 million smartphones during the quarter. (People’s Daily app)

Major job sources for foreigners shift in China

No longer dominated by language teachers, job positions in other industries for foreigners in China have seen rapid increase in recent years, according to figures from the 2019 Job Fair for Foreigners in Beijing.

Job openings in service sector, IT and media industries, including journalists, brand and communication managers and software engineers, take up nearly half of the job vacancies at the fair, which is organized by the Foreign Talent Research Center and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs on Sunday. Paris Easter Mass honors firefighters who saved Notre Dame

The archbishop of Paris and Catholics from France and the world honored the firefighters who saved Notre Dame Cathedral, by praying at a special Easter Mass for a swift reconstruction of the beloved monument.

Some streets around the medieval cathedral also reopened six days after the blaze.

That allowed tourists to get a closer look and local restaurants to reopen.

Notre Dame isn’t expected to reopen to the public for five or six years.

But French President Emmanuel Macron is pushing for a quick reconstruction. (AP)

Japanese PM Abe's ruling bloc suffers rare losses in two by-elections

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling bloc suffered two rare losses in by-elections on Sunday in an apparent warning from voters not to get complacent ahead of a national election for parliament's upper house later this year.

The defeats in a lower house by-election in Osaka, western Japan, and another on the southern island of Okinawa – host to the bulk of US military bases in the country – were the first such losses since Abe returned to office in December 2012, except for one uncontested poll. (CGTN)

Civil aviation covers 31.3 pct of passenger turnover in China's traffic system

And civil aviation transport has contributed 31.3 percent of passenger turnover in China's comprehensive traffic system in 2018.

That’s according to the latest report from civil aviation authorities.

By the end of 2018, they said China had 235 certified airports, which could extend to more than 90 percent of the country's prefecture-level cities.

China is now the world's second-largest civil aviation market, and the International Air Transport Association expects it to become the largest by the mid-2020s. (Xinhua)
