Chinese President Xi Jinping said the May Fourth Movement, with its mighty force, inspired the ambition and confidence of the Chinese people and nation to realize national rejuvenation.

Speaking to young representatives from all walks of life at a gathering to commemorate the centenary of the movement, Xi said the movement was a great patriotic and revolutionary campaign pioneered by advanced young intellectuals and participated by people from all walks of life to resolutely fight imperialism and feudalism.

China's manufacturing PMI remains stable in April

The purchasing managers' index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector remained stable at 50.1 in April, slightly down from 50.5 in March. 

Tuesday's data also showed the service activity eased pace but maintained steady expansion as the non-manufacturing PMI came in at 54.3, down from 54.8 last month. 

The April’s PMI was the second highest since November and stayed above the boom-bust line for two consecutive months. High-tech manufacturing continued to lead the trend and imports and exports showed warming signs, said the National Bureau of Statistics. (Xinhua)

US deputy attorney general Rosenstein resigns

US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein submitted his resignation Monday.

That ended a nearly two-year run defined by his appointment of a special counsel to investigate connections between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia.

Rosenstein’s departure had been expected since the confirmation of William Barr as attorney general.

Rosenstein intended to leave around mid-March but stayed on for the completion of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. (AP)

Japanese emperor Akihito abdicates throne

Japan's Emperor Akihito abdicates at the end of Tuesday marking the end of the three-decade long Heisei Era.

He is the first Japanese monarch who steps down from the throne in more than 200 years.

Akihito performed his last rituals at the Imperial Palace earlier in the day. Crown Prince Naruhito will accede to the throne on Wednesday. (Xinhua)

38 killed as floods worsen in Mozambique after second cyclone

Heavy rain battered northern Mozambique on Monday as residents and relief workers confronted the widespread devastation wrought by Cyclone Kenneth.

The strongest cyclone to ever hit Africa killed 38 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Cyclone Kenneth made landfall late on Thursday in Cabo Delgado province, packing wind gusts of up to 220 kilometers per hour.

The UN predicted further heavy rain over the coming days. (AFP)

US army veteran arrested for plotting terror attacks

A US army veteran was arrested for plotting terror attacks in western US state of California, said authorities on Monday.

Muslim convert Mark Steven Domingo, 26, was taken into custody Friday on terrorism charges. He was arrested after accepting what he believed to be a live bomb, delivered by undercover officers.

Domingo was previously a US Army infantryman, serving in Afghanistan from Sept. 2012 to Jan. 2013. He planned and took steps to build and use a weapon of mass destruction. Authorities said he considered attacks targeting Jews, churches, and police officers. (Xinhua)

China to facilitate cross-border e-commerce settlement

And China issued a guideline to facilitate the settlement of cross-border e-commerce.

It said payment institutions are allowed to offer market entities electronic payment services through banks under current accounts, depending on relevant electronic transaction information.

They can also provide Chinese residents with foreign exchange services for cross-border shopping, overseas education and tourism. (Xinhua)
