Mueller says charging Trump with crime 'not an option'

US Special Counsel Robert Mueller said charging President Donald Trump with a crime was "not an option we could consider" due to Justice Department guidelines.

He made the statement in his first public appearance on the investigation into the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

Mueller concluded his 22-month investigation in March by submitting a report to Attorney General William Barr.

The report stated that there was no evidence that Trump's campaign conspired with the Russian government during the 2016 US elections.

But the report did not conclude if the president had obstructed justice.(Xinhua)

China allows car owners to swap license plates

China's traffic authorities have approved the swapping of license plates between cars registered with the same owner.

The swap should apply to the same category of non-business vehicles and can only happen once a year. Owners can also retain an old license plate number up to two years after the car is sold, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

The new rule, to be effective from June 1, is among a series of measures the ministry will take to better serve the public.(Xinhua)

Red Notice fugitive Xiao Jianming turns himself in

One of China's most wanted graft fugitives has returned to China and turned himself in.

This, after fleeing overseas.

Xiao Jianming is the 58th on China's top 100 fugitives listed on the Interpol Red Notice who have returned.

He is suspected of accepting bribes, and fled abroad in December 2012.

Chinese authorities urged other fugitives to give up the illusion of going unpunished and return to China as soon as possible for a more lenient punishment.(People's Daily app)

China's central bank injects liquidity into market

China's central bank, on Thursday injected 30 billion yuan ($4.35 billion) into the financial system through open market operations.

To maintain sufficient liquidity, the central bank conducted the operations with seven-day reverse repos at an interest rate of 2.55 percent.

No reverse repos matured Thursday.

The move came after the central bank deposited 80 billion yuan as time deposits with commercial banks under the central treasury cash management.(Xinhua)

Seven South Koreans dead, 19 missing after boat sinks in Budapest

Seven South Koreans have died and 19 others are missing after a river cruise boat capsized and sank on the Danube in Budapest, Hungary.

The accident happened near the parliament building in the heart of the Hungarian capital after a collision with another boat on Wednesday.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in had instructed officials to "deploy all available resources" for the rescue.(AFP)

China launches campaign to train scientifically-literate farmers

China announced a three-year campaign to improve the science literacy of its rural population on Thursday.

In three years, the country will train 4 million scientifically-literate farmers, who understand science, master modern agricultural technology and have certain business management capability.

The rural proportion of the scientifically-literate population last year was 4.93 percent, lower than the national average of 8.47 percent.(Xinhua)

World's tiniest surviving baby born in California

And a California hospital announced the birth of the world's smallest baby ever to survive.

The 8.6-ounce girl was born 23 weeks and three days into her mother's pregnancy.

After nearly five months at the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, she was discharged home earlier this month weighing a healthy five pounds, and sporting a graduation cap.(AP)
