Philippines ships 69 containers of garbage back to Canada

The Philippines on Friday shipped 69 containers of what its officials called illegally transported garbage back to Canada.

It’s one of two Southeast Asian countries that have protested being treated like dumpsites by wealthier nations.

Tons of garbage were loaded overnight on a container ship.

It left on a 20-day journey to Vancouver. 

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte had threatened to forcibly ship back the trash, which officials said was transported to the Philippines in 103 containers in 2013 and 2014. (AP)

China's composite PMI stands at 53.3 in May

The composite purchasing managers' index (PMI) of China stood at 53.3 in May, slightly down 0.1 percentage points from the previous month. 

A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while a reading below reflects contraction.

The country's corporate business activities remained basically steady, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said.

The PMI for manufacturing sector came in at 49.4, down 0.7 percentage points from April. However, the PMI for non-manufacturing sector stayed the same as the previous month at 54.3, showing its continuous momentum of steady growth. (Xinhua)

Ministry warns against misuse of vital resource to impede China's development

China will not allow any country to use products made from its rare-earth exports to impede China's development.

A Commerce ministry spokesman said China has been the world's largest supplier of rare-earth materials, and has always been willing to meet the requirements of its trade partners.

The ministry's remarks came after the Trump administration raised tariffs on Chinese goods and restricted Huawei's business operations, which has harmed the interests of companies and financial markets on both sides. (China Daily)

Two sides of China-Russia highway bridge connected

Two sides of the first highway bridge connecting China and Russia across the Heilongjiang River were joined together on Friday.

The bridge stretches from Heihe, a border city in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, to the Russian city of Blagoveshchensk.

It is a key part of a cross-border highway project, which was first proposed by China and Russia in 1988. Construction of the bridge began in December 2016, and is expected to complete in October.

With the help of the bridge, the passenger flow between the two cities is expected to reach 1.4 million by 2020, triple the current figure. . (Xinhua)

Trump announces new 5% tariff on Mexican goods to halt migrants

US President Donald Trump said he would impose a new five-percent tariff on all imported Mexican goods beginning June 10.

This, to pressure the country to halt undocumented migrants crossing the border.

Tesla to deliver Shanghai-manufactured model 3 in 6-10 months

Tesla announced Friday that the model 3 manufactured in the Shanghai gigafactory was available for pre-order and expected to deliver in six to ten months.

The Shanghai-manufactured model 3, with starting price of 328,000 yuan ($47,529), is more affordable than the imported counterpart.

The Tesla factory is the largest foreign-invested manufacturing project in Shanghai's history, and Tesla's first outside the United States. (Xinhua)

China slashes $16 billion VAT in one month

And China's latest value-added tax cuts have slashed more than $16 billion in taxes since the new VAT policies took effect in April.

Aside from VAT reform, business taxes for small and micro enterprises have also been largely reduced starting this year. 

Officials said more than 20 million small and micro businesses no longer need to pay taxes due to the preferential policies. (CGTN)
