China to launch nationwide inspection on fight against gang crimes

China plans to launch a nationwide inspection on the fight against gang crime.

Three rounds of inspections will be conducted between July and the end of 2019, each covering about 10 provincial-level regions.

The country began a new campaign against organized crime and officials who shelter criminal organizations earlier this year. (Xinhua)

US House passes bill to strengthen CFIUS

The US House of Representatives passes the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act.

That aims to strengthen the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US and its goal of reviewing security implications of overseas investments.

Lawmakers say it’s meant to tighten the assessment of investments from China.

However, some businessmen fear it might become a tool for protectionism. (People's Daily app)

Central govt invests 648 million yuan in campus soccer since 2015

The Chinese government has also taken various proactive measures to reverse the decline of China’s soccer industry and build China into a soccer powerhouse.

Since 2015, the central government has invested 648 million yuan in campus soccer.

Local governments have invested more than 196 million yuan. 

The investment reflects China’s determination to develop soccer vigorously. (People's Daily app)

Prince William visits Israel's Holocaust memorial

Prince William begins his visit to Israel with an emotional tour of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, a soccer game with Arab and Jewish youth and an introduction to Tel Aviv’s vibrant start-up scene.

The prince is the first member of the British royal family to visit Israel.

Though the trip is considered non-political, the prince is meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders and visiting sites at the heart of the century-old conflict. (AP)

Bolton heads to Moscow for talks on possible Trump-Putin summit

US National Security Adviser John Bolton is expected in Moscow on Wednesday for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and possibly President Putin.

It’s part of an effort to lay the ground for a summit between Putin and President Donald Trump.  

A senior US official says Helsinki is being considered as a location for the summit. (Reuters)

Communist Youth League convenes its 18th congress

And the Communist Youth League of China convened its 18th national congress in Beijing.

Analysts say it could be an important turning point in the organization's history as it undergoes crucial reforms. 

One of the congress’ highlights will be to set Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as the league’s guiding principle. (Global Times)
