China opens markets further with new negative list for foreign firms

China releases a new negative list that expands market access for foreign investors.

The list includes the financial, automobile and services industries.

The new list takes effect on July 28.

It identifies areas that are restricted or have not been fully opened to foreign investors.

The number of areas restricted to foreign investors was reduced to 48 from 63 in the 2017 version.

China to launch nationwide inspection of real estate irregularities

China's housing regulator will launch a national campaign to crack down on malpractices by real estate agents and developers.

From July to December this year, 30 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Nanjing, will be inspected for real estate irregularities.

Local authorities are required to act strongly against monopolistic practices, false certificates and illegal housing financing tools.

Shooting in Maryland's Annapolis causing at least 5 injured

At least five people have been shot in a building housing the Capital-Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland.

Police say there had been an "active shooter” at the building and that the suspect is in custody.

A reporter at The Capital Gazette tweeted that a person fired into the newsroom and shot several employees.

An eyewitness says the gunman fired through the glass door to the office.

EU leaders reach migration deal, divisions remain

European Union leaders agree on pledges to address migration.

This, after all-night talks in Brussels over the sensitive issue threatening their union and zone of free travel.

The meeting in Brussels underscored how Europe's 2015 spike in immigration continues to haunt the bloc despite a sharp drop in arrivals of people fleeing conflict and economic hardship in the Middle East and Africa.

US appoints long-awaited ambassador to South Korea

The US fills one of the most glaring holes in its diplomatic roster.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to approve Admiral Harry Harris as US Ambassador to South Korea.

Harris is the outgoing head of the US Pacific Command and a veteran Asia hand.

The post has been vacant since President Donald Trump took office on January 20 last year.

Harris was a hawkish commander, and was once considered as US Ambassador to Australia.

He’s a strong supporter of joint military exercises between US and South Korean forces.

HKSAR gov't 'strongly disagrees' with US trafficking in persons report

The government of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region says it strongly disagrees with a US report on human trafficking.

A Hong Kong government spokesman says the US Department of State's continued disregard of the Hong Kong government's determined, persistent and reinforced efforts is most deplorable and unacceptable.

He added that the report contains criticism not founded on facts and allegations not supported by evidence.

Chinese military to deliver Ebola research center to Sierra Leone

And the People's Liberation Army's first infectious disease prevention and control center in Africa will be delivered in early July.

The center for the study of tropical infectious diseases will  soon be completed and delivered to the government of Sierra Leone.

The center will mainly help prevent and treat infectious disease outbreaks.
