Overseas Chinese rally against Hong Kong secessionists and violence

Overseas Chinese held peaceful and patriotic rallies around the world over the weekend.

This, after a group of separatists organized protests in major Western cities.  

The peaceful rallies were held in London, Paris, Sydney, Cologne and Vancouver to oppose violence and separatists in Hong Kong.

In Vancouver, police had to separate patriots and separatists on both sides of a street. (Global Times)

China's H1 solid waste imports fall over foreign garbage ban

China saw falling imports of solid waste in the first half (H1) of this year with the implementation of the ban on foreign garbage.

The country's solid waste import reached 7.286 million tonnes in H1, down 28.1 percent year on year, according to Li Ganjie, head of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

China issued a plan in 2017 to phase out import of solid waste capable of being replaced by domestic resources by the end of 2019.

About 1.55 million tonnes of smuggled foreign waste was seized by the country's customs authorities last year. (Xinhua)

Brexit chaos dossier dismissed by Cabinet minister as out of date

A confidential government dossier warning of the impact of a no-deal Brexit was described as a worst-case scenario document.

That’s according to Michael Gove, the cabinet minister tasked by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to prepare for a no-deal departure by Britain from the European Union.

The Sunday Times said the report was compiled by the Cabinet Office and offered a rare glimpse into the covert planning being carried out by the government to avert a catastrophic collapse in the nation's infrastructure. (Xinhua)

China honors role model doctors on Medical Workers' Day

China has honored 10 medical workers and a team of volunteer doctors as "role model doctors" for their dedication to public health as the country celebrates its second Medical Workers' Day on Monday.

Honorees include a late vaccine pioneer who spent his life fighting against polio, an ophthalmologist who has brought sight to nearly 30,000 blind people, as well as health guardians of people living in rural and border areas.

China set Aug. 19 as its Medical Workers' Day to call for respect from society for the country's more than 11.7 million medical and health workers. (Xinhua)

The Iranian oil tanker seized by Britain for weeks has left Gibraltar for international waters.

The monitoring website Marine Traffic said the supertanker lifted anchor Sunday evening and started sailing south.

Gibraltar seized the Grace 1 on July 4 on suspicion it was transporting oil to Syria in breach of European Union sanctions.

Iran has repeatedly denied any violations.

Scores feared dead in oil tanker explosion accident in western Uganda

Scores of people are feared dead after a fuel tanker exploded in the western Ugandan district of Rubirizi on Sunday, a police spokesperson said.

A regional police spokesperson said that the explosion occurred after the petrol tanker overturned, exploded and burst into flames at Kyambura trading center.

"The fire gutted all the shops, vehicles and motorcycles parked there. I am told a number of people got burnt completely. We are yet to get the exact number who died and number of causalities," he said.

He said the police have deployed a fire brigade truck from Bushenyi to try to put off the fire and an ambulance for evacuation. (Xinhua)

China to build Shenzhen into socialist demonstration area

And China released a guideline to build Shenzhen as a pilot demonstration area for socialism with Chinese characteristics.

It’s a move analysts believe will upgrade the city to a better place compared with its neighbor Hong Kong.

The guideline seeks to improve the strategic plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and enrich the "one country, two systems" policy. (Global Times)
