Shenzhen police detain British consulate employee for soliciting prostitutes

The employee of the British Consulate General in Hong Kong is being detained for 15 days for soliciting prostitutes.

They said Simon Cheng Man-kit violated article 66 of China's law on administrative penalties for public security.

It states people who engage in prostitution or visit prostitutes shall be detained for no less than 10 days but no more than 15 days.

They may also be fined 5,000 yuan.

They added that Cheng's family was not informed about his detention at his request. (Global Times)

US withdrawal from INF treaty leads to negative impact on global strategic balance and stability: Chinese envoy

The UN Security Council held an open session on Thursday on the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF). Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, attended the meeting and stated China’s position.

Zhang said that the unilateral withdrawal of the US led to the demise of the treaty, which will have a far-reaching negative impact on global strategic balance and stability, regional security in Europe and Asia as well as international arms control regime.

China strongly urges the relevant country to take a highly responsible attitude, exercise restraint and earnestly preserve the existing arms control regime in an effort to safeguard global strategic balance and stability and international and regional peace and security, Zhang added. (People's Daily app)

Amazon wildfires represent an 'international crisis': Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron said wildfires in the Amazon were an "international crisis" and called on this weekend's G7 to address the issue.

He’s the latest international figure to raise the alarm over the raging wildfires in the Amazon.

Earlier, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was "deeply concerned" by the wildfires that have blanketed several Brazilian cities in thick smoke.

Nearly 73,000 fires were recorded between January and August this year, compared with 39,759 in the same period last year. (AFP)

Hong Kong court extends interim injunction at airport amid continuing threat of disturbances

The High Court of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Friday extended an interim injunction at Hong Kong International Airport amid repeated calls in social media for further disturbances at the airport in the coming weekend.

After days of disturbances and violence by unlawful assemblies at the airport, the Airport Authority Hong Kong obtained on Aug. 13 an interim injunction from the court to restrain persons from unlawfully and willfully obstructing or interfering with the proper use of Hong Kong International Airport.

The airport authority put out advertisements on local newspapers on Friday, urging young people who love Hong Kong not to support or take part in any action that would obstruct the airport's operation or damage its international image, so as to avoid impact on the hundreds of thousands of people working in Hong Kong's industries of aviation, tourism, transport, logistics and trade. That’s according to a report that surveyed major players from the sector about their stance on lethal autonomous weapons.

China's first cloned police dog ready for missions

China's first cloned police dog, an 8-month old Kunming wolfdog named Kunxun, passed the police dog assessment on Thursday and is now ready for work, Xinhua reported.

In early March, Kunxun arrived at the Kunming Police Dog Base in Southwest China's Yunnan Province, where it participated in a professional police dog training program.

Born on Dec 19, 2018, Kunxun was cloned from Huahuangma, a seven-year-old female Kunming wolfdog on duty at the Pu'er police station in Yunnan. Known for its first-class field work abilities, Huahuangma is considered an outstanding canine detective.

According to a genetic test by a third-party testing institution, Kunxun's DNA is 99.9 percent identical to Huahuangma's. (Xinhua)

China develops first maritime medical aid simulation training system

And China has unveiled its first military maritime medical aid simulation training system.

The system is aimed at improving medical personnel's capability of providing medical aid in naval battles.

With its original simulated patients and body parts, the system can allow a maximum of six trainees to simultaneously conduct surgery training. (Xinhua)
