China asks for WTO authorization to impose sanctions on US goods

China has asks for authorization from the World Trade Organization to impose an annual trade sanction of 7 billion dollars on US goods.

This, as a result of the failure of the US to comply with a WTO ruling.

A document circulated to all WTO members said China requests authorization from WTO's Dispute Settlement Body to "suspend concessions or other obligations" with respect to the US "at a level equivalent to the nullification or impairment suffered", due to the failure of the US to comply with the recommendations and rulings of the body.

China won a WTO ruling in 2016 in a dispute on certain methodologies applied by the US during its anti-dumping proceedings.

The ruling was later confirmed by an appeal last year. (Xinhua)

Public security bureau to record illegal cases of fund-raising platforms

The public security bureau started registering cases of online lending platforms suspected of being involved in illegal fund-raising on Monday.

The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) vowed to protect investors’ equity in relevant cases and to tighten its crackdown on illegal fund-raising cases.

Some 50 cases have been recorded since the regulation was implemented. Investors can register at the website (http://ecidcwc.mps.gov.cn) and follow the latest information of their cases.

The ministry is urging more investors to register on the website to protect their equity and to facilitate investigations and evidence gathering.

China recorded 5,197 illegal fundraising cases in 2016, involving 251.1 billion yuan (39.8 billion US dollars). (People’s Daily app)

Zambia set to launch system on reporting online child sexual abuse images

The Zambian government is expected to launch a new system for anonymously reporting online child sexual abuse images and videos.

The system will be launched in collaboration with an international charity organization, the Internet Watch Foundation.

Zambia becomes the 24th country to launch the portal.

The head of Zambia’s Information Communication Technology Authority said the regulator will remain committed to ensuring that children have a secure and safe environment to access the cyber world. (Xinhua)

China performs best in Asia in QS Graduate Employability Rankings

A total of 34 universities from China are included in the Global 500 of the QS Graduate Employability Rankings, which was released on Tuesday.

China's overall performance in the rankings is strong and the best in Asia. Tsinghua University is ranked ninth and is joined in the top 20 by Peking University (20th).

China's most successful graduates come from Peking University. It achieves the country's highest score in QS's Alumni Outcomes indicator, and the world's 25th-highest score.

Three of the world's top 20 scores for Partnerships with Employers are achieved by Chinese institutions -- Zhejiang University (second), Tsinghua University (third), and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (19th). (Xinhua)

Maui schools, courts to close for Tropical Storm Olivia

Hawaii braces for Tropical Storm Olivia.

Schools, courts and government offices are closing in Maui County as Olivia approaches the state.

The county and the Red Cross are opening seven shelters on the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

Olivia is approaching east of Maui and heading west with maximum sustained winds near 90 kilometers per hour.

The National Weather Service says Olivia is expected to drop 5 to 10 inches of rain in some areas.

Public schools on the Big Island, Oahu and Kauai will be open. 

Hawaii Gov. David Ige is asking President Donald Trump to declare an emergency for the state. (AP)

Rising European life expectancy undermined by obesity: WHO

Life expectancy in Europe continues to increase but obesity and the growing proportion of people who are overweight risks reversing this trend, the World Health Organization warned Wednesday.

In its European Health Report, covering 53 countries in a vast geographical area from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the UN agency found well-being is the highest in the world but varies widely within the region. 

Average life expectancy from birth has increased from 76.7 years in 2010 to 77.8 years in 2015. Women continue to live longer than men -- 81.1 years compared to 74.6 years for men, although the gap has slightly narrowed.

There are also major differences between countries. Men live almost 16 years longer in Iceland (81.4 years) than in Kazakhstan (65.7 years). (AFP)

Over 527-bln-yuan investment signed at int'l trade fair

And deals worth 77 billion dollars have been signed at the 20th China International Fair for Investment and Trade.

The four-day event has attracted over 1,000 commercial groups and 5,000 companies from 128 countries and regions.

The event has become an effective and important platform for promoting two-way investments, publishing official information, and discussing investment trends.

The event is held in Xiamen every September. (Xinhua)
