HKSAR govt condemns violent acts of radical protesters at airport, stations

The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region denounced the violent acts of radical protesters on Sunday at Hong Kong International Airport and subway stations.

In a statement, the SAR government said it strongly condemns the vandalism of violent protesters, noting that their barbaric behavior showed complete disregard for the needs of the public and tourists.

The statement added police will act decisively to protect the safety and rights of the general public. (CGTN)

735 million railway trips made in China during summer travel rush

A total of 735 million railway trips were made in China during summer travel rush from July 1 to August 31, up 10.4 percent year-on-year, according to the China Railway Corporation (CRC).

The railway stations in the Yangtze River Delta region saw more than 141 million people depart during the summer travel rush over the past two months, which was 10 percent more than last year and a record high compared with the previous years.

During the two-month summer vacation, trains from Shanghai to cities like Beijing, Urumqi in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Huangshan in Anhui Province where popular tourist destinations are located, were mostly packed. (CGTN, Xinhua)

Gunman of US Texas shooting identified

Police in Odessa, Texas identified the suspect as 36-year-old Seth Aaron Ator.

However, they didn’t provide any additional information, and the gunman's motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

But they do not believe there's any connection to any domestic or international terrorism.

A victim who died Sunday morning brought the death toll to seven in what police have called a random act of violence Saturday afternoon in the Midland-Odessa area. (Xinhua)

First two Chinese panda babies born in German zoo

A zoo in Berlin is celebrating the arrival of two panda cubs, the first time one of the rare mammals has given birth in Germany.

"(The Chinese panda) Meng Meng became a mom twice! We are so happy, we are speechless," zoo Tierpark Berlin wrote on its official twitter.

The zoo said Monday that mother Meng Meng gave birth to a hand-sized pink  cub around 7 o’clock Saturday night. An hour later, its twin was born.

Keepers confirmed last week that Meng Meng was pregnant. And the father of the twin panda babies is Meng Meng’s 9-year-old partner Jiao Qing. The couple arrived from China in June 2017. (AFP, Xinhua)

Germany asks Poland's forgiveness 80 years after WWII outbreak

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Sunday asked Poland's forgiveness for history's bloodiest conflict.

Poland suffered some of the worst horrors of World War II.

Nearly six million Poles died in the conflict that killed more than 50 million people overall.

That figure includes the six million Jews who died in the Hol-ocaust, half of whom were Polish. (CGTN)

Chinese donate 442 mln USD online in 2018

Chinese people donated about 442 million U.S. dollars through online charity platforms last year, up 26.8-percent from a year ago, according to a report on the implementation of China's Charity Law.

A total of 20 platforms are currently eligible to post donation requests online, according to the report released Sunday by China Philanthropy Research Institute.

In 2018, they published more than 21,000 fund-raising requests for over 1,400 charity organizations, attracting the participation of 8.46 billion Internet users.

Guangdong ranks first in the country with 748 charitable organizations, followed by Beijing and Zhejiang with 728 and 630, respectively. 

Ningxia, Guangxi and Shandong stand as the top three regions in terms of the growth rate of charitable organizations. (Xinhua)

Beijing's tech hub records 11.9-pct revenue increase

Beijing's high-tech hub recorded a yearly revenue in-crease of 11.9 percent in the first seven months of the year.

This, amid active technological innovation.

The hub’s six major high-tech fields have maintained rapid growth, with year-on-year increases of 14 percent and 13 percent in electronics and information and advanced manufacturing, respectively.

The hub also invested 130 billion yuan in research.

That’s a 16.2 percent increase over the same period last year. (Xinhua)
