Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei Province, issued the country's first commercial licenses to companies for trials of driverless vehicles in open road conditions.

The companies–including Baidu, Haylion Technologies and DeepBlue Technology–received licenses from the Wuhan traffic authority and will be allowed to conduct trials in designated areas of a 28-kilometer road and start commercial operations.

Powered by multi-functional traffic monitor poles that stand every few hundred meters, the driverless vehicles can reduce time lapses to milliseconds and improve the precision of positioning to centimeters.

The poles are equipped with 5G wireless technology and China's domestic BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. (CGTN)

A blood pump that deploys magnetic levitation technology to better support heart function has been developed by a medical device company in Suzhou, Jiangsu province and will begin clinical trials in the United States next year, according to researchers.

The lemon-sized machine, also known as a left ventricular assist device, is implanted in a patient with a critical heart condition and assists in pumping blood.

It has been used in at least nine trial surgeries led by experts from Beijing's Fuwai Hospital, affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

He Xin, a patient who received the device in China, said that he is now able to climb stairs and walk for hundreds of meters. In the past, he had to take long breaks after walking short distances.

The domestically developed device holds the potential to benefit even more patients with heart problems in China, cardiology experts said. (China Daily)

Indonesian forest fires are putting nearly 10 million children at risk from air pollution, the United Nations warned Tuesday, as scientists said the blazes were releasing vast amounts of greenhouse gases.

The fires have been spewing toxic haze over Southeast Asia in recent weeks, closing schools and airports, with people rushing to buy face masks and seek medical treatment for respiratory ailments.

Jakarta has deployed tens of thousands of personnel and water-bombing aircraft to tackle the slash-and-burn blazes set to clear agricultural land. The fires are an annual problem but this year are the worst since 2015 due to dry weather. (AFP)
