Xi Jinping inspects rice farms in northeast China's Heilongjiang

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday arrived in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province for an inspection tour.

Xi began his tour at the Jiansanjiang branch of the Heilongjiang Farms and Land Reclamation Administration to inspect the conditions of grain production and harvest.

Known as China's "green rice city," Jiansanjiang is one of  China’s most important commodity grain bases.

It is located in the heartland of the Sanjiang Plain, an alluvial plain created by three rivers. 

Jiansanjiang has 15 large and medium-sized state-owned farms, covering an area of 12,400 square kilometers. (CGTN)

China's Huatai Securities ready for first London-Shanghai GDR issuance

China's leading securities brokerage Huatai Securities issued a notice on Tuesday, stating that it is to launch the nation's first Global Depository Receipt (GDR) on a global scale and list on the London Stock Exchange, targeting qualified international investors.

It could be taken as the first GDR under the long-awaited London-Shanghai Stock Connect, a mechanism for the interconnection between the Shanghai and London Stock Exchanges, via which eligible listed companies can issue depository receipts and trade on the other side's market.

Huatai Securities aims to raise at least 500 million US dollars via issuance of GDR in the British capital to boost working capital for domestic and overseas expansion, as a way to further optimize the company's business layout, enhance market competitiveness and anti-risk capability. (CGTN)

China voices support to 2015 Iran nuclear deal at UNGA

The remaining parties of the 2015 Iran deal have decided to keep working to maintain trade with Tehran.

This comes as Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councilor Wang Yi met Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Wang said China is pleased that the International Atomic Energy Agency has recognized Iran's obligations in the deal.

Diplomats from Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China, Iran and the EU met in New York on Monday and agreed to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle to facilitate payments related to Iran's exports.

The plan is meant to circumvent US sanctions due to be restored in November. (CGTN)

Tiangong-2 to complete mission and deorbit next July

China's Tiangong-2 space lab will deorbit next July after successfully completing its two-year on-orbit flight and various test tasks. 

This September marks its two year anniversary being in operation, according to a briefing on Wednesday.

The Tiangong-2 platform and loading application are in working order and in good condition. In order to improve operations, the space lab will be in orbit until July 2019, and then deorbit under manual control, according to the Tiangong-2 Space Lab Operation Management Committee. 

Tiangong-2 operates in a near-circular orbit with an average orbital height of about 400 kilometers, Deputy Director of the Design Department of the Space Engineering Program, Lin Xiqiang introduced. (People’s Daily app)

World leaders laugh as Trump boasts of his achievements

US President Donald Trump got some laughter when he addressed world leaders on Tuesday.

He said the American economy was “booming like never before” and that his administration has accomplished more in less than two years than almost any other administration.

His boast elicited laughter from the scores of heads of state and delegates in the audience for the speech.

Trump has long claimed that his predecessors’ weak leadership prompted other nations “to laugh” at the US.

As he was leaving the UN, he told reporters that he had meant to be funny. (AP)

Shanghai imposes heavy fines for mixing sorted garbage

Waste disposal operators in Shanghai will face a fine of up to 100,000 yuan ($14,585) if they are found mixing sorted garbage during the collection and transportation process.

The city's legislature has reviewed a draft regulation Tuesday regarding garbage classification, which aims to regulate all processes involved in garbage sorting, including dumping, collection, transportation and treatment.

According to the draft, processing companies should use clean methods and eco-friendly manufacturing technologies. Priority will be given to products that can be recycled, while limits will be set on packaging. The burial method for dry waste disposal will also be phased out by 2020.

Any waste disposal operators who violate the rules will be fined, and licenses will be suspended for serious cases. (China Daily)

Argentina on strike as central bank chief resigns amid IMF talks

And Argentina was paralyzed by a general strike while the central bank chief resigned amid talks with the International Monetary Fund on a revised crisis loan package.

IMF chief Christine Lagarde said a deal with Argentina was "close to the finish line" after a "very good meeting" with President Mauricio Macri on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Argentines protested the loss of purchasing power brought on by the peso losing around half of its value against the dollar this year.

Many shops, banks and public offices were closed, with public transport and taxis at a standstill. (AFP)
