The fire threatened its collection of more than 20 million items, ranging from archeological findings to historical memorabilia.

Globo news said there was no information yet on potential deaths, injuries, cause of the fire or extent of the damage at Rio’s Museu Nacional.

The fire broke out after visiting hours and was still raging and appeared to be growing Sunday night.

The fire department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The museum, which is tied to the Rio de Janeiro federal university and the Education Ministry, was founded in 1818.

It houses several landmark collections, including Egyptian artifacts and the oldest human fossil found in Brazil. (Reuters)

United Nations (UN) member states will on Tuesday kick off long-awaited talks on a 2020 treaty that would regulate the high seas, which cover half the planet yet lack adequate environmental protection.

Four sessions of talks, each lasting two weeks, are planned to take place over two years, with the goal of protecting marine biodiversity and avoiding further pillaging of the oceans.

"The negotiations will relate to spaces beyond national jurisdictions or areas that belong to no country in particular," said Julien Rochette of the Paris-based think tank Iddri, or the Institute of Sustainable Development and International Relations.

Talks will focus on "the high seas and the international zone of marine waters, or about 46 percent of the planet's surface," he added.

In 1982, the UN adopted the Convention on the Law of the Sea but left the high seas free from restrictions.  (CGTN)

And Ziroom, a major Chinese apartment rental service provider, said it will cooperate with an investigation into the death of a tenant, that his wife has linked to toxic indoor fumes.

In January, the tenant moved into a studio rented and decorated by Ziroom in Hangzhou City, where he was employed by Alibaba.

In July, he was diagnosed with leukemia and died three days later in Beijing.

His wife subsequently tested the apartment and reportedly  found an excessive level of formaldehyde, which she blamed for her husband's death.

On Sunday, Ziroom posted a statement on Weibo pledging to actively cooperate with the judiciary and respect the court's ruling in the lawsuit.

The company said it has suspended all rental services starting September 1. (CGTN)
