HAIKOU, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Three workers have been confirmed dead and two others slightly injured at a sewage treatment facility owned by the Haikou Veolia Water in China's southernmost province of Hainan, local authorities said Thursday.

The accident happened at 9:20 a.m. Thursday in the provincial capital of Haikou. The municipal emergency management, fire, water affairs and public security departments have sent rescuers to the site.

The water company uses a high-efficiency wet air oxidation method to treat degradable organic wastewater.

The accident is still under further investigation. No environmental damages to nearby places have been monitored.
