The 14th meeting of Group of Twenty (G20) will be held this week in Osaka, Japan. Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the summit, marking the seventh consecutive time for him to attend the G20 summit.

The G20 countries account for 86 percent of global GDP, nearly 80 percent of world trade and about two-thirds of the world's population.

In recent years, economic globalization has suffered setbacks as increasing protectionism and unilateralism has been overshadowing international growth.

In such circumstance, how leaders of the world's major countries give their insights and offer their solutions to address these problems is widely anticipated.

As the head of second largest economy, Xi has been calling for openness, inclusiveness, multilateralism and common development.

Let's review some of his proposals from his remarks at previous G20 summits.

An ancient Chinese philosopher observed that "Reviewing the past enables us to learn about the law governing the evolution of history."

In mankind's relentless quest for development and progress, the trend toward openness and integration among countries is unstoppable despite ups and downs in the global economy.

Going forward, win-win cooperation is the only choice for us, be it in good times or bad.

We should firmly uphold the free trade and the rules-based multilateral trading system.

As the world's major economies, we should and must lead the way, support the multilateral trading system, observe the jointly established rules and, through consultation, seek all-win solutions to common challenges we face.

We must remain committed to openness and mutual benefit for all so as to increase the size of the global economic “pie."

Protectionism is like drinking poison to quench one's thirst: It may ease a country's internal pressure in the short term, but will only inflict severe damage to the country itself and the world economy in the long run.

We should reject protectionism and uphold and strengthen the multilateral trading regime in order to provide sufficient space for the development of different countries. We should ensure that regional free trade arrangements serve as a useful complement to multilateral trading regime, rather than create new obstacles or barriers.

The expansion of world trade will benefit all countries, and the shrinkage of the world market will not do any good to any country. We should continue to be the flag-bearers for international free trade, safeguard the multilateral trade system, build a mutually beneficial and win-win global value chain, and cultivate a big global market.

"All flowers in full blossom make a beautiful spring." Economies make progress together through exchange and interconnectivity, while falling behind because of seclusion and closeness. We must follow the trend of the times, oppose all forms of protectionism, and make coordinated use of both domestic and international markets and resources.

In summary, countries are increasingly interdependent today, and they are all part of a global chain of cooperation. Only by upholding openness and cooperation can we gain more opportunities and greater space for development.

What Xi has said is not only in line with economic law and historical trends, but also the common aspiration of the people of all countries.
