Dr. Zhang Wenhong, a Shanghai-based infectious disease expert, said Sunday that a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in China in winter is inevitable, considering the ongoing second round in Europe.

The pandemic will continue for a long period of time as the virus poses a threat to the world, Zhang said. "The coronavirus is highly contagious, but overall fatality from it is not high, and 80 percent of virus carriers are asymptomatic", he noted.

Zhang also answered public concerns about the pandemic in an online interview.

Zhang said China's nationwide efforts ensured no increased domestically transmitted cases in nearly a month. "But imported cases can expose us to risks for a relatively long period of time."

"Professionals can block the virus at the border, so that people don't have to wear masks or stay at home all day. But in mass gatherings, especially with strangers, wearing a mask remains a must," Zhang added.

On whether it is possible to travel during China's National Day holidays, Zhang said people still need to be alert. While 90 of life has returned to normal, it's not 100 percent safe.
